What is the Zebra Mildliner Brush?

It is the brush-pen version of Zebra’s Mildliner: a soft nylon brush on one end, an extra-fine bullet on the other, in the same muted colors. Zebra Japan pitches it for decorating planners: brush letters and color fills that don’t drown out the writing.

The standard Zebra Mildliner pairs a chisel with a fine tip. The Brush, model WFT8, swaps the chisel for a brush and makes the fine end finer.

How do the two tips differ?

The brush end makes thick-to-thin strokes by pressure; the bullet end writes a steady fine line. Zebra says the nylon brush lets you adjust the line width with how hard you press, for brush letters and coloring.

The other end is a round extra-fine tip at 0.5 to 0.7 mm, which Zebra calls the finest in the Mildliner series. That makes it usable for small notes in a planner, not just underlining.

What colors does it come in?

Twenty-five, which Zebra groups into five themes. It launched with 15 colors on March 18, 2019, and 10 more went on sale on November 16, 2020, per Oggi: coral pink, apricot, lemon yellow, cyan, dark gray, lavender, summer green, citrus green, marigold and fuchsia.

Zebra Japan’s theme names translate as subtly fluorescent, muted, soothing, friendly and bright. English-language shops rename them: Yoseka sells Mild and Fluorescent, Cool and Refined, Deep and Warm, Mild and Friendly, and Bright Colors, while Hunter Paper uses Subtle Fluorescent, Muted, Soothing, Friendly and Bright for the same JAN codes.

Which 5-color set should you buy?

Pick by mood: the five sets split the 25 colors by tone, and each set has its own JAN code. The table pairs Yoseka’s and Hunter Paper’s names for the same code.

JAN Yoseka name Hunter Paper name
4901681424948 Mild and Fluorescent Subtle Fluorescent
4901681424955 Cool and Refined Muted
4901681424962 Deep and Warm Soothing
4901681425631 Mild and Friendly Friendly
4901681425648 Bright Colors Bright

Hunter Paper lists all five as made in Japan. US-coded packs carry Zebra USA item numbers instead, such as 79505 for the Friendly set.

Is the ink pigment or dye?

Pigment: Zebra lists water-based pigment ink, as in the standard Mildliner. Yoseka describes it as water resistant.

That also means it isn’t a watercolor brush pen. Tidformera, a Swedish shop, says the ink’s water resistance rules out blending with water; we will check that in our hands-on test.

How does it compare with other soft brush pens?

It is a short, light planner pen, not an art brush pen. At 10.5 g it weighs about the same as an 11 g Pentel Pulaman, per the two makers.

For fine brush lettering with a firmer tip, see the Tombow Fudenosuke. For a cheap hard-tip brush pen with dye ink in deeper colors, our Pilot Fude-Makase guide compares lengths and weights of the two.

Where is it made, and what does it cost in the US?

It depends on the pack: Japan for the Japanese sets, Mexico for at least one US-coded set. Hunter Paper Co. lists its five Japanese sets as made in Japan, while Tidformera lists Zebra item 79505, the Friendly 5-pack with a US UPC, as made in Mexico.

On October 29, 2026, Yoseka listed single pens at US$2.50 in all 25 colors and the 5-color sets at US$12.50. We couldn’t read JetPens or Amazon, which block our tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use the Mildliner Brush as a highlighter?

Yes. Zebra Japan files it under line markers and pitches it for decorating planners without hiding the writing. The colors are the same soft tones as the standard Mildliner.

Is the Mildliner Brush waterproof?

Zebra calls the ink water-based pigment, and Yoseka calls it water resistant. A Swedish shop notes that this makes it unsuited to watercolor blending; we haven't tested it yet.

How many Mildliner Brush colors are there?

Twenty-five, per Zebra Japan: 15 from the March 2019 launch and 10 added in November 2020. Zebra sells them in five themed sets of five.

Is the Mildliner Brush good for brush lettering?

Zebra says the nylon brush tip changes width with pressure, which suits brush letters and coloring. It is short and soft next to a full-size art brush pen.

Can you refill a Mildliner Brush?

Zebra doesn't list a refill for it. Treat it as a disposable pen.

Is the Mildliner Brush thinner than a normal Mildliner?

Its fine end is. Zebra says the 0.5 to 0.7 mm extra-fine tip is the finest in the Mildliner series, finer than the standard Mildliner's bullet tip.
