Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen (02 EF / 03 F / 05 M): Made by Platinum Pen Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). Made in Japan: per retailer listings: Hunter Paper Co says made in Japan and Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin (both read on October 20, 2026). Platinum's Japanese product pages don't state it. Source.
TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen: Made by TaShin Precision (Taiwan). Made in Taiwan: Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. TWSBI's own product pages don't print a country of manufacture, and its Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. JetPens says TWSBI nibs are made in Germany. Source.
Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen (black, gold trim): Made by Pilot Corporation (Japan); sold in the US by Pilot Corporation of America. Made in Japan: per retailer listings: Makkura gives Japan as the origin, and eBay item specifics from sellers in Japan list Japan as the country of origin. Pilot's Japanese web catalog and press release don't state it; the 2022 anniversary edition's cap ring is engraved JAPAN. Source. Released: Pilot's Japanese press release for the 30th-anniversary model (November 18, 2022) says the Custom 74 went on sale in 1992; Goulet Pens gives the same year and ties the name to Pilot's 74th anniversary.
Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-peki fountain pen ink, 50 ml bottle: Made by Pilot Corporation (Japan); sold in the US by Pilot Corporation of America. Made in Japan: Kohezi's listing for the 50 ml Kon-peki gives Made in: Japan and says Pilot has always made its own inks. Pilot's Japanese catalog page for INK-50-KO (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country; its JAN, 4902505367281, carries Japan's 49 prefix, which shows where the code was registered, not where the ink was made. Source. Released: Pilot's Japanese site says Iroshizuku went on sale in 2007 with five colors but doesn't name them, so 2007 is the line's launch year; we found no Pilot date for Kon-peki itself.
Sailor Shikiori Yama-dori fountain pen ink, 20 ml bottle: Made by The Sailor Pen Co., Ltd., Kure, Hiroshima, Japan; majority-owned by PLUS Corporation since May 2022. Made in Japan: Hiroshima Prefecture's profile of Sailor says its site in Kure, Hiroshima makes fountain pens, inks and ballpoints, and the bottle's JAN 4901680184676 carries Japan's 49 GS1 prefix (it shows where the code was registered). Sailor's product page doesn't print a country of origin. Source.
Midori MD Notebook A5, 176 pages (blank, lined, grid, dot grid or frame): Made by Designphil Inc. (Tokyo); the MD line is now sold as MD PRODUCT. Made in Japan: Midori's Japanese MD PRODUCT store gives 原産国 (country of origin) Made in Japan for the A5, as did the older Midori online store listing for the lined A5 (15294006). The Journal Shop, Galen Leather and Boston General Store agree. Source. Released: Designphil's February 23, 2018 press release says Midori launched the MD Notebook in 2008 and marked its 10th anniversary in January 2018; Midori's store says the notebook reached 15 years in 2023, when it was renewed with MD Paper covers.
Tomoe River S 52 gsm Loose-Leaf Paper, A5, Blank, White, 100 sheets (Sanzen): Made by Sanzen Paper Co., Ltd. (三善製紙, Kanazawa, Ishikawa). Made in Japan: Papeterie Makkura lists this A5 white pack (EAN 4909171851502) as made in Japan, and Pulp Addiction says the same for the A5 and A4 sheets. Yamamoto Paper's Japanese wholesale listing says Sanzen (三善製紙) makes the paper in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, and gives 生産地 (place of production) Japan for its Tomoe River S pad. We found no official Sanzen website. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Yamamoto Paper's Japanese listing says Sanzen began full-scale production of Tomoe River S in February 2022; the original Tomoegawa paper ended in 2021.
LAMY Z 28 converter, red (item 1324763): Made by C. Josef Lamy GmbH, Heidelberg (part of Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd.). Made in Germany: LAMY's own Z 28 product listing (Ireland storefront) describes it as "Made in Germany", and LAMY's site says Heidelberg has been its only production site since 1930. LAMY's India product page, which gave Germany as the country of origin, has since been taken down. Source.
Galen Leather Zippered 10 Slots Pen Case: Made by Galen Leather Co. (Istanbul). Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).
Key takeaways
One pen per price band: the Platinum Preppy ($$, $5–20), the TWSBI ECO ($$$, $20–75) and the Pilot Custom 74 with a 14k gold nib ($$$$, over $75).
The TWSBI ECO holds up to 1.76 ml of bottled ink per Goulet Pens, more than the 1.23 ml Goulet lists for a Custom 74 with its CON-70 converter.
Pilot sells Iroshizuku Kon-peki in a 50 ml glass bottle; Sailor's Shikiori Yama-dori comes in a 20 ml bottle 58 mm tall.
Tomoe River S paper is 52 gsm, about 35% lighter than the 80 g/m² MD Paper in the Midori MD Notebook.
The Galen Leather 10-slot case holds pens up to 145 mm long, so the Preppy (138 mm), ECO (138.8 mm) and Custom 74 (143 mm) all fit capped, by our arithmetic.
What is the best gift for a fountain pen lover?
On published specs, the best gift depends on budget: a Platinum Preppy under $20, a TWSBI ECO at $20–75 or a Pilot Custom 74 over $75, or ink, paper or a case for someone who already has pens. There’s no single #1, because the right gift depends on budget and on what the person already owns, so we give one pick per budget and per kind of gift.
Best pen under $20:Platinum Preppy. Why it’s here: the cheapest pen here, a 13 g cartridge pen whose Slip & Seal cap, Platinum says, keeps ink fresh for a year, for someone curious.
Best pen at $20–75:TWSBI ECO. Why it’s here: a clear piston filler holding up to 1.76 ml, with five steel nibs from EF to a 1.1 mm stub, for someone who already uses bottled ink.
Best pen over $75:Pilot Custom 74. Why it’s here: the only gold nib here, a 14k No. 5 in a 143 mm resin pen made since 1992, for someone ready for a step up.
Best ink:Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-peki. Why it’s here: the classic ink gift, a deep cerulean blue in a heavy 50 ml bottle that looks good on a desk.
Best ink under $20:Sailor Shikiori Yama-dori. Why it’s here: more color for less money than Iroshizuku, a dark teal with a red sheen in a 20 ml bottle.
Best notebook:Midori MD Notebook A5. Why it’s here: 176 pages of cream 80 g/m² MD Paper, thread-sewn to open flat, heavier than Tomoe River, so less shows through.
Best paper for showing off ink:Tomoe River S. Why it’s here: 100 loose A5 sheets of 52 gsm paper, the thinnest here, for someone who wants to show off ink; writing shows through.
Best converter:LAMY Z28. Why it’s here: a small, useful add-on for a LAMY safari, AL-star or vista owner: about 0.8 ml of bottled ink per fill.
Best pen case:Galen Leather Zippered 10 Slots. Why it’s here: ten loops for pens up to 145 mm in vegetable-tanned leather, room for every pen on this list.
How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ specs and claims, Goulet Pens’ measurements, US availability and price band. We chose by budget and by what a fountain pen user uses up or carries: a pen, ink, paper, a converter or a case.
How do the fountain pen gifts compare?
Five gifts sit in our $$ band ($5–20), three in $$$ ($20–75) and one pen in $$$$ (over $75).

Which fountain pen should you give?
Give the Preppy to someone curious, the ECO to someone who already uses bottled ink, and the Custom 74 to someone ready for a gold nib. The ECO fills only from a bottle, so pair it with one of the inks here.
A Pilot Fine or Extra Fine nib writes finer than a Western one of the same name, which suits small handwriting. Our best fountain pens under $100 roundup has more choices.
Which ink makes the best gift?
A Pilot Iroshizuku bottle is the classic gift, and Sailor’s Shikiori line gives more color for less money. Pilot lists Kon-peki at ¥2,200 (about US$14) per 50 ml in Japan, and Sailor lists Yama-dori at ¥1,320 (about US$8.40) per 20 ml.
Goulet’s smear tests put Kon-peki’s dry time at about 20 to 25 seconds, and Yama-dori’s at 5 to 10 seconds on Rhodia paper. Both have low water resistance, per Goulet.
Is paper a good gift for a fountain pen user?
Yes, because good paper is used up and replaced like ink. Midori’s MD Paper is 80 g/m² and cream; Tomoe River S is 52 gsm, so it is very thin and writing shows through, which some users like for sheen.
Sanzen Paper of Kanazawa has made Tomoe River S since Tomoegawa ended production in 2021.
What accessories do fountain pen users want?
A converter for bottled ink and a case for carrying pens are the most useful. The LAMY Z28 fits eight LAMY pens and lists at €5.90 (about US$6.60) in Germany, so check the person’s pen brand first.
The Galen case’s ten elastic loops take pens up to 145 mm, which covers all three pens in this list when capped.
Where are these gifts made?
Six of the nine come from Japan, the TWSBI ECO from Taiwan, the LAMY Z28 from Germany and the Galen case from Turkey, per makers and retailers. TWSBI’s origin is from Goldspot’s spec sheet; the others are from the makers or the retailers named in each guide.
Frequently asked questions
What do you buy someone who already has fountain pens?
Ink and paper are the safest gifts, because they get used up. A bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku or Sailor Shikiori and a Midori MD Notebook or a pack of Tomoe River paper suit almost any pen.
What is a good fountain pen gift under $20?
The Platinum Preppy, in our $$ band ($5–20). Platinum says its Slip and Seal cap keeps a fitted cartridge from drying out for a year, and it comes in Extra Fine, Fine and Medium.
Is a gold nib fountain pen a good gift?
For a keen user, yes. The Pilot Custom 74 has a 14k gold nib and lists at ¥38,500 (about US$244) in Japan, in our $$$$ band (over $75).
Will a LAMY Z28 converter fit any fountain pen?
No. LAMY lists the Z28 for eight of its own pens, including the safari, AL-star and vista. Pilot pens take Pilot converters such as the CON-70.
How much ink is in a bottle of Iroshizuku?
The standard Pilot Iroshizuku bottle holds 50 ml (1.7 fl oz), and a 15 ml mini bottle is also sold. Pilot lists the 50 ml Kon-peki at ¥2,200 (about US$14) in Japan.
What paper do fountain pen users like?
Midori's MD Paper and Tomoe River are two of the most named. Tomoe River S is very thin at 52 gsm, while MD Paper is 80 g/m² and shows less through the page.
Is a leather pen case a good gift?
It is a good gift for someone with several pens. The Galen Leather 10-slot case holds ten pens up to 145 mm long in elastic loops, and Galen says it is handmade in Turkey.
