What is the Kaweco Student?
It’s Kaweco’s full-size acrylic fountain pen, styled after its pens of the 1920s and named for the university students who were its first customers. Kaweco’s German series page says the company began in 1883 with a small shop near Heidelberg University, selling mostly to young students.

See our Kaweco Sport guide for the pocket pen, the Kaweco Perkeo for Kaweco’s budget full-size pen, and the Kaweco system guide for which nibs, converters and cases fit which pens.
What ink does the Kaweco Student use?
Standard international cartridges or Kaweco’s converter. Kaweco offers eleven ink colors as cartridges or bottles, and its standard converter fits the Student.
Kaweco’s Mini Converter is made for the pocket Sport and Liliput; the larger Student takes the Standard converter. Our converters guide explains how converters work.
Which nib should you choose on the Kaweco Student?
Kaweco recommends M for beginners. It says EF suits small, fine handwriting and BB is often used for large, dramatic signatures.
The nib unscrews, and Kaweco says any nib with its 060 thread will fit. Western nibs such as Kaweco’s write about one size broader than Japanese nibs of the same letter, per Goldspot; our nib sizes guide compares them.
Where is the Kaweco Student made?
In Germany, by Kaweco’s account: its Amazon US listing says the pens are hand-assembled and individually inspected in Nuremberg, and all nibs are made in Germany. Kaweco’s German product page repeats the German-made nibs.
Kaweco’s own shop has paused orders to the USA because of import and customs costs, so US buyers need a US retailer. For the brand’s story, see our Kaweco history.
