It ships with the Jetstream M17 F (0.7 mm) black refill; an M17 EF (0.5 mm) is sold separately at ¥1,100 (about US$7) in Japan.

What is the LAMY safari JETSTREAM inside?
It’s a LAMY safari ballpoint with Mitsubishi Pencil’s Jetstream ink inside, in a black 0.7 mm refill called the M17. Mitsubishi Pencil, which bought LAMY in 2024, launched it in Japan on January 29, 2025 and called it the first step of the partnership. Our story on the LAMY deal explains why the Tokyo company bought the Heidelberg pen maker.
The body is the familiar safari: glossy ASA plastic, a molded grip and the wire clip. The difference is the refill. Jetstream is the low-viscosity oil-based ink of the uni-ball Jetstream RT, and LAMY says it gives black lines about twice as dense as conventional oil-based ink.

Which Jetstream refill is inside?
The Jetstream M17 F, a 0.7 mm black refill made for LAMY ballpoints. Mitsubishi Pencil also sells an M17 EF (0.5 mm); both list at ¥1,100 (about US$7) including tax in Japan, and both come only in black.
In the US, The Gentleman Stationer sells the M17 at US$10 and says it’s made in Japan, and Simple Paper sells the M17EF and M17F at US$15. The Gentleman Stationer’s own review says the M17 improves on the standard M16 significantly.
Can you use a regular LAMY M16 refill?
LAMY says the M17 is compatible with the M16 and fits existing LAMY ballpoints, so the two refills are interchangeable in size. The JETSTREAM inside also has the same 10 × 10 × 138 mm and 14 g that LAMY lists for the regular safari ballpoint, which ships with an M16.
LAMY doesn’t say directly that an M16 goes into the JETSTREAM inside. Because LAMY calls the two refills compatible, it should fit, but we haven’t tested it; that matters if you want blue ink, since the M17 comes only in black.
How is it different from a regular safari ballpoint?
Only the refill and the price: the body, size and weight match. LAMY’s US shop lists the regular safari ballpoint at US$20 with an M16 refill, and LAMY Japan lists it at ¥3,740 (about US$24), against ¥3,850 (about US$24) for the JETSTREAM inside.
Same Jetstream ink in two bodies of almost the same length.
If you already own a safari ballpoint, an M17 refill gets you the same writing for less. The fountain-pen LAMY safari shares the body design but takes T10 cartridges instead.
What colors does it come in?
Seven: vista, blue, red, umbra and yellow, plus the limited dark dusk and sunset. Mitsubishi Pencil’s release lists the first five as continuing colors and the last two as limited. LAMY Japan showed dark dusk and sunset as sold out on October 26, 2026.
Where can you buy it in the US?
Only from importers: LAMY’s US shop doesn’t list it. LAMY’s February 27, 2026 release says the pen launched on the Japanese market, and lamy.com carries it only on the Japanese site.
On October 26, 2026, Today Life Stationery in California listed it at US$29.99 with red, blue and umbra in stock, and Simple Paper in Florida listed it at US$40 with vista in stock. Both sit in our $$$ band ($20–75 per pen), above a regular safari ballpoint.
