Made by Montblanc-Simplo GmbH (Hamburg, Germany), part of Richemont since 1993. Made in Germany: Montblanc's own product data for MB132105 (the variant data its German and US shops load for this page) lists the country of origin as GERMANY; the visible page text doesn't state it. Released: Montblanc's German Meisterstück history page says the 142, 144 and 146 came out in 1949 and the 149 three years later; Robb Report and Inkstable also give 1952. The Meisterstück line itself dates to 1924.
Colors: names per Montblanc, checked October 24, 2026. Montblanc's US product data for MB132105 gives one color, black, for every nib size from EF to OBB; the gold-coated 149 and special editions are separate products. The pen is a piston filler, so no cartridge is listed. Iguanasell, an authorised Montblanc retailer, also lists it as black precious resin with platinum-coated fittings. The tint was sampled from Montblanc's product photo. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

What is the Montblanc Meisterstück 149?
The 149 is the largest fountain pen in Montblanc’s Meisterstück line: a cigar-shaped piston filler in black precious resin with a handmade 18K gold nib. Montblanc calls it its design icon, and it’s the pen most people picture when they hear the brand.
Montblanc’s German history page dates the Meisterstück name to 1924. In 1949 it launched the cigar-shaped 142, 144 and 146, and “three years later”, in 1952, the 149 joined as a new, larger size. When Montblanc switched to slim injection-molded pens in the 1960s, it says the 149 was the only model left unchanged.

Posting adds about 19 mm, so most people write with the 149 unposted. Figures from Iguanasell.
What is special about the 149’s nib?
It’s a large, solid Au750 (18-karat) gold nib that Montblanc says takes 35 steps to make and is checked by ear. Montblanc’s German page says its nibs are made from 585 or 750 gold, and that each one passes strict quality checks, including a sound test.
The platinum-coated 149 has a two-tone nib, and Montblanc engraves 4810, the height of Mont Blanc in meters, on the cap and the nib. Our story on how a fountain pen nib is made follows those steps in Montblanc’s Hamburg workshop and at other makers.
Montblanc sells the 149 from EF to OBB, including oblique widths. European widths such as Montblanc’s generally run broader than Japanese ones of the same letter; see our nib sizes guide.
What is the difference between the Montblanc 146 and 149?
The 149 is bigger and has an 18K nib; the 146, sold as the LeGrand, is smaller with a 14K nib. Both are piston-filling Meisterstück fountain pens in black precious resin.

Is the Montblanc 149 worth it?
You pay for the name and the history as much as for the writing: other piston-filling pens with gold nibs cost far less. Our best luxury pens roundup picks the 149 as the status gift and the Pelikan Souverän M800 as the better all-rounder on published specs.
In Germany: Montblanc’s product data for MB132105 gives Germany as the country of origin. Iguanasell, an authorised retailer, lists the same, and Montblanc describes making its nibs at its Hamburg Manufacture.
Montblanc belongs to the Swiss luxury group Richemont, which took control in 1993 and full ownership in 1998, as our story on who owns which stationery brands explains.
How much does a Montblanc 149 cost?
It’s in our $$$$ band, over $75; Montblanc’s German shop lists it at €1,280 (about US$1,434). A gold-coated version and special editions sit alongside it; buy from Montblanc or an authorised dealer, since counterfeits of Montblanc pens are common.
