The three Japanese ball sizes to scale, and the Synergy Tip's pipe-plus-cone shape.

What is a Synergy Tip?

It’s Pilot’s own fine tip that joins a needle-like pipe tip at the front to a stronger cone tip behind it. Pilot Japan says this keeps a fine tip sturdy while widening the ink path, so it starts writing easily and writes smoothly.

Pilot says it developed a dedicated Synergy Tip for FriXion ink, whose particles are larger than ordinary gel ink, which is what made a 0.3 mm FriXion possible for the first time.

How does FriXion ink erase?

Rubbing with the rubber end heats the ink past about 60 °C (140 °F), where it turns colorless. Pilot USA says the color comes back if you cool the page to 14 °F (−10 °C), for example in a freezer.

That cuts both ways: a hot car or a laminator can make writing vanish. Pilot USA says erasable pens aren’t recommended for legal or official documents.

Mitsubishi Pencil’s uni-ball R:E ink works the same way, turning colorless at 60 °C; its last multi pen, the R:E3 BIZ, is now discontinued.

How is it different from the FriXion Clicker?

The Synergy Clicker writes finer; the FriXion Clicker comes in more colors and a bold point.

Synergy Clicker FriXion Clicker FriXion Synergy 3
Tip Synergy Tip, 0.5 mm (US) Cone tip, 0.7 or 1.0 mm Synergy Tip, 0.4 mm

If you write in small planner boxes, the Synergy Clicker’s thinner line keeps letters from closing up. Our best erasable pens roundup names it the pick for small handwriting.

What does the Japanese Synergy Knock look like?

Pilot Japan gives every Synergy Knock a gray body and shows the ink color on the clip. The rubber eraser on the end changes color with the tip size, so you can tell 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm apart in a pen cup.

Pilot Japan sells it in 8 ink colors: black, red, blue, green, blue-black, orange, pink and light blue. Pilot USA’s assortment is smaller, so a Japanese import is the way to get the 0.3 mm or the rarer colors.

Can you refill the Synergy Clicker?

Yes: Amazon’s US listings say refills are sold separately, and Pilot Japan names LFRF-15 for the 0.5 mm. Pilot Japan sells LFRF-153 as a black, red and blue 3-pack, and LFRF-15 singly in other colors.

Pilot USA’s standard 0.7 mm FriXion refills are for the regular Clicker and FriXion Ball, so match the refill to the Synergy Tip.

Where is the FriXion Synergy Clicker made?

Pilot doesn’t state it on the pages we read, and the Amazon US listings give no country of origin. Pilot is a Japanese company based in Tokyo.

Check the pack or barrel print if origin matters to you.
