What is the Zebra Sarasa Grand?
It’s a metal-bodied Sarasa: Zebra’s popular gel refill in a heavier, dressier barrel. Zebra Pen, the US arm of Tokyo’s Zebra Co., sells it with a brass barrel, a 0.7 mm tip, its Rapid Dry Ink and a clear window for watching the ink level.
Two different pens share the name. The US Sarasa Grand was reviewed by The Pen Addict in July 2017. Japan’s Sarasa Grand launched on March 9, 2020 as a “grown-up Sarasa” with vintage ink colors, and was redesigned on March 12, 2024.

Zebra Japan gives its figures for both sizes. OnTimeSupplies lists the US pen at 5.63 in (143 mm) tall, and unsharpen lists 14.3 cm.
From Zebra Japan's figures: the Grand is slimmer than a Sarasa Clip but almost twice as heavy.
How is the US Sarasa Grand different from Japan’s?
The US pen is a 0.7 mm black-ink pen in bright metal colors; Japan’s is a finer, matte pen made for planners. Zebra Pen lists Navy, Gold, Rose Gold, Black, White and Turquoise barrels for the US pen.
Zebra Japan says about 60% of Sarasa Grand users write in planners or notebooks, and that they found the original too heavy. So the 2024 model changed materials to cut about 5 g, lowered the center of gravity, added a 0.3 mm size and moved to a metal version of the Sarasa Clip’s binder clip. At launch it cost ¥1,320 (about US$8.40); Zebra Japan now lists ¥1,650 (about US$10).
What refill does the Sarasa Grand take?
Zebra’s JF gel refill, the same family that fits the Sarasa Clip. That makes it easy to switch colors or sizes: one reviewer in The Pen Addict’s comments put a 0.5 mm vintage Sarasa Clip refill in a gold Grand. The spring-cushioned Sarasa Nano takes JF refills too, in 0.3 and 0.38 mm.
Zebra Pen says its Rapid Dry Ink dries in less than a second on most surfaces, a claim it bases on third-party lab tests on nine writing surfaces. That’s the maker’s claim; we haven’t timed it.
How does it compare to other metal gel pens?
It’s one of the cheapest ways into a metal gel pen, and the only one here built around Sarasa refills.
If you’d rather have a quick-drying gel pen in plastic, see the Zebra Sarasa Dry.
A similar all-metal gel pen from Japan is the OHTO GS02, which uses a G2-size gel refill with a ceramic ball.
Where is the Zebra Sarasa Grand made?
Zebra doesn’t say, and listings disagree. OnTimeSupplies gives China as the country of origin for the gold 0.7 mm pen (45511), while unsharpen lists Japan. Neither Zebra Pen’s US page nor Zebra Japan’s product page states it, so check the package.
How much does a Sarasa Grand cost?
It falls in our $$ band, $5–20 per pen. Zebra Pen’s three-pen gift set works out lower per pen than a single, and Japan’s version lists at ¥1,650 (about US$10).
