What is the Staedtler Textsurfer classic 364?

It’s Staedtler’s standard refillable highlighter: a chunky barrel with a twist cap and a soft chisel tip that draws about 1–5 mm. Staedtler, the Nuremberg pencil maker, sells it in wallets of 3 to 20 and says it holds a large ink reservoir for extra-long highlighting.

JetPens picks it as the best highlighter for written notes in its highlighter guide. On Amazon US, the 20-colour wallet alone had 15,623 ratings when we checked on October 22, 2026.

What does INK·JET SAFE mean?

Staedtler says the ink won’t smudge inkjet printouts or handwritten text. Water-based highlighters can reactivate inkjet ink and some pen inks and drag them across the page, which is the main complaint about highlighting home printouts.

Staedtler also says the ink dries in seconds and works on paper, fax paper and carbon copies. Its violet and turquoise are copy-proof, meant for originals you will photocopy, because those colours don’t show on the copy.

How does the Textsurfer classic compare with other highlighters?

It’s the bigger, refillable choice: JetPens weighs it at 22 g, and Staedtler sells refill ink for it.

If bleed-through on thin paper is your worry, a dry gel stick like the Textsurfer Gel is safer; see our highlighters that don’t bleed roundup.

What is the Textsurfer classic good for?

Marking printed pages and handwritten notes, which is what JetPens picks it for. Staedtler sells it for ordinary paper, fax paper and carbon copies, and the INK·JET SAFE label targets home printouts.

The 1–5 mm chisel covers both jobs: hold it on the narrow edge to underline a phrase, or flat to cover a full line of 10–12 point type. The wide 24.1 mm barrel suits a desk more than a slim pencil case.

On thin paper, such as a Bible or a Tomoe River notebook, any liquid highlighter can show through, so test it on the last page first.

Which colours does the Textsurfer classic come in?

Eight neon colours in the classic 364, plus pastel and vintage shades in the 364 C. JetPens sells single pens in yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, green and turquoise.

The 364 C uses the same body and chisel with softer colours, and Staedtler sells a 20-pen wallet (364 WP20) that mixes the neon, pastel and vintage sets. JetPens lists its pastel wallets with dye-based ink.

Is the Textsurfer classic good for the environment?

Staedtler says the housing is 97% recycled plastic and the pen is refillable, so one barrel can last for several fills. The barrel and cap are recycled polypropylene, which Staedtler says gives them a long service life.

The cap twists rather than snaps, which Staedtler says makes it easier to open. Staedtler also says the tip is locked, so heavy pressure can’t push it back into the barrel.

Where is the Staedtler Textsurfer classic made?

In Germany: both Staedtler product pages we read carry a Made in Germany mark. Staedtler is based in Nuremberg.

Amazon’s US listings don’t state a country of origin, so check the barrel or package if origin matters to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Staedtler Textsurfer classic refillable?

Yes. Staedtler lists it as refillable and sells refill ink for it, which is unusual for a cheap highlighter.

What is the line width of the Textsurfer classic 364?

Staedtler gives about 1–5 mm from its chisel tip: the narrow edge for a thin underline, the broad face for a whole line of text.

Does the Textsurfer classic smear inkjet printouts?

Staedtler says no: it labels the 364 INK·JET SAFE and says it doesn't smudge inkjet printouts or handwritten text. We haven't tested that claim yet.

What is the difference between the Textsurfer classic 364 and 364 C?

The 364 C is the pastel and vintage colour version in the same body with the same 1–5 mm chisel. Staedtler sells both in mixed wallets, such as the 20-colour 364 WP20.

What's the difference between the Textsurfer classic and the Textsurfer Gel?

The classic is a liquid-ink felt-tip highlighter you can refill. The Textsurfer Gel is a solid gel stick that goes on dry in a 3 mm line and isn't refillable.

Is the Staedtler Textsurfer classic made in the USA?

No. Staedtler's own product pages mark the Textsurfer classic 364 as made in Germany.

Can you take a Textsurfer classic on a plane?

Staedtler calls it airplane-safe: it says an automatic pressure equalization stops the pen leaking in flight.
