Specs are from posca.com, Mitsubishi Pencil, Newell’s product data and MOLOTOW’s German shop.
The three bullet tips write lines of about the same width.
Do you need to shake a paint marker?
POSCA and MOLOTOW, yes; the Sharpie Creative Marker, no. Mitsubishi Pencil says to shake a POSCA with the cap on until the ball clicks and about 20 times more, then pump the tip about twice a second until paint flows.
MOLOTOW’s FLOWMASTER valve works the same way. Sharpie says there’s no need to shake its Creative Marker and recommends storing it lying flat.
Which paint marker covers dark surfaces best?
All three are sold for dark surfaces; POSCA has the longest track record there. Mitsubishi Pencil describes POSCA as a water-based marker with colors as vivid as poster paint, and the ink is opaque enough to layer.
Sharpie says the Creative Marker shows on light and dark surfaces, and MOLOTOW calls its paint highly opaque. For white details on black paper with a finer line, see our best white gel pens.
Which surfaces can you paint?
Paper, wood, stone, glass and metal for all three, with different staying power. posca.com adds concrete and says POSCA is permanent on porous surfaces but wipes off most smooth ones.
Sharpie lists paper, metal, wood, ceramic, glass, rock and canvas. MOLOTOW says ONE4ALL works on almost all surfaces indoors and outdoors, and is UV-resistant except the neon colors.
Which is cheapest to keep using?
The MOLOTOW, because you refill it instead of buying a new marker. MOLOTOW sells 6-marker sets at €23.50 (about US$26) and replacement 2 mm tips at €3.25 (about US$3.60) for 5 in its German shop.
POSCA sells replacement PCR-5 tips, 3 for ¥66 (about US$0.40) in Japan, but no paint refills. The Sharpie Creative Marker is a one-use marker.
Which should you buy?
Buy POSCA for crafts, rocks and lettering; Sharpie for a classroom or quick projects; MOLOTOW for murals, outdoor pieces and heavy use.
For blending rather than solid color, alcohol markers such as Copic Sketch are the better tool, and for lettering, our best brush pens.
For dot art on rocks, Amazon’s best-selling ARTISTRO dual-tip markers pair a 1 mm fine tip with a 1–5 mm dot tip and need no pumping.
Where are they made?
POSCA in Japan, MOLOTOW in Germany and the Sharpie Creative Marker in China. posca.com lists “Made in Japan” for the PC-5M, and MOLOTOW’s shop lists Made in Germany for ONE4ALL.
Newell’s product data gives China as the country of origin for the black Sharpie Creative Marker, item 2218123.
