Key takeaways
Copic Japan lists the Sketch in 358 colors at ¥495 (about US$3.10) and the Ciao in 180 colors at ¥330 (about US$2.10); both are 150 mm long with the same two nibs.
Ohuhu's own FAQ calls the Honolulu its bestseller: a round barrel with brush and chisel tips, 344 colors and sets of 6 to 320.
Copic says a refill puts about 1.8 ml of ink into a Sketch and 1.4 ml into a Ciao; Ohuhu sells 16 ml refill bottles for the Honolulu.
Arteza lists 3 mm fine and 6 mm chisel tips on the EverBlend and says it has never tested the markers' lightfastness.
All five use alcohol-based dye ink, which bleeds through ordinary paper, so pair them with marker paper or a sheet underneath.
What are the best alcohol markers?
The Copic Sketch is the best alcohol marker to buy and refill for years, and the Ohuhu Honolulu is the best value; the other three cover a cheaper Copic, a fine tip and very large sets. The Sketch is #1 because it has the most colors here (358), Copic sells refills for every one and every nib is replaceable, which matters more than upfront price for markers you keep.
Best overall:Copic Sketch. Why it’s here: the widest range here (358 colors), each refillable with about 1.8 ml of ink per refill, per Copic, and a flexible Super Brush plus a chisel nib, both replaceable.
Best value: Ohuhu Honolulu. Why it’s here: brush and chisel tips, 344 colors and 16 ml refill bottles, close to Copic’s range at about a dollar a marker (Ohuhu listed the 48-color set plus blender at US$49.99 on October 21, 2026).
Cheaper Copic:Copic Ciao. Why it’s here: the same nibs and ink as the Sketch for ¥330 (about US$2.10) in Japan against ¥495 (about US$3.10); you give up some ink and half the colors (180).
Fine tip:Prismacolor Premier Double-Ended. Why it’s here: its fine bullet tip suits outlines better than the brush tips on Copic and Ohuhu, and it’s the US art-store classic, in sets up to 200 colors.
Big sets on a budget: Arteza EverBlend. Why it’s here: sets of 12 to 144 in our $ band, with a 3 mm fine and a 6 mm chisel tip, for big color counts when you don’t need a brush.

How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ specs and claims (Copic Japan, Ohuhu’s FAQ), AsinSight’s Amazon sales estimates, US art-store ranges, US availability and price band. We weighted refillability and color range most, because alcohol markers are bought to keep and add to.
How do the five alcohol markers compare?
They split into refillable brush markers (Copic, Ohuhu) and fine-and-chisel markers (Prismacolor, Arteza).

Copic sizes and refill amounts come from Copic Japan; the Ohuhu set range and colors from Ohuhu’s FAQ.
Ohuhu vs Copic: which should you buy?
Buy Copic if you will draw for years and want every color refillable; buy Ohuhu if you want many colors now. Copic sells refill ink in all 358 colors plus replacement nibs, and one bottle refills a Sketch about seven times by Copic’s figures.
Ohuhu’s Honolulu matches Copic’s brush-and-broad layout with a chisel instead of the Medium Broad, and Ohuhu now sells 16 ml refill bottles and replacement brush nibs. Parka Blogs, comparing them, wrote that for the same money it would get about twice as many colors from Ohuhu, with ink of similar quality.
One catch with Ohuhu is naming: Ohuhu has moved its alcohol markers to a new color-code system, and its FAQ links a chart that maps old codes to new ones. That matters when you buy single markers to fill gaps.
Copic Sketch or Copic Ciao?
Pick the Sketch for its full range and bigger ink supply, the Ciao if you want Copic nibs for less. Copic says the Ciao holds less ink and carries 180 of the 358 colors; both take the same Copic Ink refills and nibs, so a Ciao is not a dead end.
Copic says the Sketch’s oval body carries a color mark with the code and name on each cap. For people who already own a Copic Classic, Copic Japan lists that original 1987 model in 214 colors with broad and fine nibs instead of a brush.
Do alcohol markers bleed through paper?
Yes: alcohol ink soaks straight through copy paper and most sketchbooks. Use a smooth marker paper, such as the 70 gsm Canson XL Marker pad, or slip a scrap sheet under your page. For sketchbooks that take markers, see our best sketchbooks.
If you want color that stays on one side of thin paper, water-based brush pens such as the Tombow Dual Brush Pen are the alternative; compare them in our best brush pens roundup.
Are alcohol markers lightfast?
Treat them as not lightfast. They are dye inks: Ohuhu’s FAQ says to keep art out of direct sunlight and strong UV to prevent fading, and Arteza says it has never tested EverBlend lightfastness. Scan or photograph work you sell or frame.
Which alcohol markers sell best in the US?
Ohuhu is the brand most often near the top on Amazon; Copic leads in art stores. AsinSight’s July 2026 estimate of Amazon sales puts an Ohuhu Honolulu set among the top three listings for “alcohol markers”, behind a generic 60-color set. Spectrum Noir, a British brand, rarely appears in US lists, so we left it out.
Another budget chisel-and-fine set, Caliart’s 41 colors, has close to 14,000 Amazon ratings but no refills.
Where are these markers made?
Retailers give China for the Ohuhu, Japan for the Copic Ciao, and the United States or Mexico for Prismacolor; no maker states it. Digitec lists China for the Ohuhu, Amazon’s Ciao set listings say made in Japan, and distributors list the US (OnTime Supplies) or Mexico (OfficeCrave) for Prismacolor’s 12-color set. Copic doesn’t state a country for the Sketch, nor Arteza for the EverBlend; Copic is a Japanese brand of Too Marker Products in Tokyo, and Prismacolor and Arteza are US brands.
Frequently asked questions
Are Ohuhu markers as good as Copic?
For many hobbyists they are close: Parka Blogs found Ohuhu's ink similar in vibrance and blending to Copic for about half the money. Copic still has more colors in one range (358), sells replacement nibs and has refill ink for every color.
Can you refill Ohuhu markers?
Yes. Ohuhu sells 16 ml alcohol ink bottles with a needle tip for its Honolulu, Oahu, Kaala and Molokai markers, plus replacement brush nibs. Not every color has a refill bottle, so check before you buy a set.
What is the difference between Copic Sketch and Copic Ciao?
The nibs and ink are the same. The Ciao has a round 12 mm body, 180 colors and holds less ink (about 1.4 ml per refill), while the Sketch has an oval body, all 358 colors and takes about 1.8 ml.
How long is a Copic Sketch marker?
Copic Japan lists the Sketch at 150 mm (5.9 in) long with an oval 11 × 16 mm body. The Ciao is the same length but round, at 12 mm across.
Can you replace the nibs on Copic markers?
Yes. Copic sells replacement nibs, and every nib on the Sketch can be swapped. The Sketch and Ciao use the same Super Brush and Medium Broad nibs, so spares fit both.
Brush tip or chisel tip: which should beginners choose?
A brush tip is easier for blending and lettering; a chisel covers big areas and draws straight edges. Ohuhu sells the Honolulu with brush and chisel tips and the Honolulu B with brush and fine tips.
What is the cheapest good alcohol marker set?
On published prices, the Ohuhu Honolulu and Arteza EverBlend both come to about one to two dollars a marker in larger sets, inside our lowest $ band (under $5).
