What are the most collectible pens?
The most collectible modern pens are small numbered editions and hand-lacquered art pens from a handful of makers, led by Montblanc’s limited editions and Japanese maki-e and urushi pens. This list covers pens from about 1990 on and rests on auction records, maker archives and collector references; we haven’t handled these pens ourselves.
- Montblanc Patron of Art Lorenzo de’ Medici (1992). The first Patron of Art pen has an octagonal sterling silver barrel and was numbered out of 4,810. Antiquorum sold one with box and papers for CHF 3,250 (about US$3,930) in Geneva on April 7, 2021.
- Montblanc Writers Edition Hemingway (1992). Montblanc’s first Writers Edition, in coral and dark brown, ran to 25,000 fountain pens and 30,000 ballpoints, per Antiquorum. One fountain pen sold there on the same day for CHF 1,625 (about US$1,970).
- Namiki Emperor maki-e. Pilot’s top maki-e pens come from the Kokkokai tradition that maki-e master Gonroku Matsuda founded in 1931. Bonhams lists a Setsugekka Emperor, numbered out of 99, as sold for US$6,250 with premium in San Francisco on June 16, 2015.
- Nakaya urushi pens (since 1999). Nakaya was founded in 1999 with craftsmen who had worked at Platinum for more than 40 years. Each pen is made to order in urushi lacquer, with the nib tuned to the buyer’s writing sample.
- Pelikan Souverän M900 Toledo (1991). It began as a limited edition of 500 pens for North America at a list price of US$1,200, per pelikan-collectibles.com. Those first pens carry W-GERMANY on the cap and a gold nib.
- Montegrappa Dragon (1995). Montegrappa says it was the first pen built with lost-wax cast parts and that the edition sold out within a month of its debut. Both claims come from the maker’s own magazine.
- Sailor King of Pen. Sailor’s largest pen is 154 mm (6.1 in) capped, with an oversized 21k gold nib, per Pens in Asia. It also comes in urushi lacquer, and Sailor has made 21k nibs since 1969.
- Visconti Homo Sapiens. Visconti makes the body from Mount Etna lava with bronze accents. It’s a regular line, not a limited one, so collectors look for early versions and special finishes.
- Danitrio Genkai. A large ebonite eyedropper pen with a size No. 8 nib, decorated in maki-e by named artists such as Kogaku. Danitrio says each maki-e piece takes two to six months.

What makes a pen collectible?
A small, numbered edition from a respected maker, hand craft such as urushi or maki-e, and a complete box and papers. Antiquorum’s lot notes list every item, down to the fitted box, booklet and guarantee. Its Hemingway lot even notes that the guarantee came from a ballpoint, so a mismatch like that is worth checking.
Craft matters as much as numbers. Pilot says its maki-e artists’ names are inscribed on the pens they decorate, and Danitrio says Japan’s pool of maki-e artists keeps shrinking.
Do limited editions hold their value?
Usually not as investments. The Gentleman Stationer wrote on May 26, 2021 that limited editions “have always been a bad investment,” because launch prices are high and retailers often discount unsold stock.
The exceptions are early, small editions with a story, such as the Lorenzo de’ Medici.
How do you start collecting on a budget?
Start with special editions of pens you would use anyway. The Pelikan M200 gets frequent special editions in marbled and demonstrator colors, and the Pilot Custom 74 was itself launched in 1992 for Pilot’s 74th anniversary.
Buy one pen you love rather than five you might resell. Keep every box and card from the start.
Where should you buy collectible pens?
At pen shows, from established dealers, and at auction houses with pen sales. Our guide to stationery events covers the Washington DC Fountain Pen Supershow, where dealers and repairers meet buyers in person.
Be careful online. The collector site fountainpen.de documents fake Montblanc Writers Editions, including the F. Scott Fitzgerald, and says copies regularly sell on eBay.
How should you store collectible pens?
Empty and flush any pen you won’t use for weeks, then store it horizontally or nib up, away from sunlight. Pen Chalet advises against long nib-down storage, and Danitrio warns that sunlight slowly dulls urushi.
Store the boxes and papers dry and flat, apart from the pens if space is short. They’re part of what a buyer pays for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most collectible Montblanc pen?
Among modern editions, the 1992 Lorenzo de' Medici, the first Patron of Art pen, is one of the most sought after; Antiquorum sold one for CHF 3,250 (about US$3,930) in 2021. The 1992 Hemingway, the first Writers Edition, is the other classic.
Do limited edition pens go up in value?
Rarely enough to count on. The Gentleman Stationer calls limited editions a bad investment because high launch prices leave little room to rise, though small early editions such as the Lorenzo de' Medici still sell well at auction.
What does box and papers mean for a pen?
It means the pen comes with its original fitted box, outer box, booklet and guarantee card. Auction houses such as Antiquorum list each item, and a complete, matching set makes a pen easier to sell.
What is maki-e on a pen?
Maki-e is a Japanese lacquer technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled into wet urushi to build a picture. Danitrio says one maki-e piece takes two to six months, which is why maki-e pens cost far more than plain ones.
How do you spot a fake Montblanc limited edition?
Compare it with photos of a known original, check the edition number and engravings, and be wary of cheap listings. The collector site fountainpen.de documents fakes, including the Writers Edition F. Scott Fitzgerald, and says copies are regularly sold on eBay.
Where can you buy collectible pens safely?
At pen shows, from established pen dealers and at auction houses with pen sales, such as Antiquorum and Bonhams. Buying in person lets you check the nib, the number and the papers before you pay.
How should you store a collectible fountain pen?
Empty and flush it before storing it for weeks or months, keep it horizontal or nib up, and keep it out of sunlight. Danitrio warns that sunlight slowly dulls urushi lacquer.
