What is the Sailor Pro Gear?

It’s the full-size model of Sailor’s Professional Gear series: a resin pen with a flat-topped cap, an anchor finial and, traditionally, a large 21k gold nib. Sailor’s Japanese site says the series keeps the shape of its Profit pens with its own styling and decoration.

It is back in the news because of a new steel nib. Goulet Pens added two SAILOR x KAMAWANU editions to its new arrivals on October 5, 2026, and The Pen Addict reviewed the steel-nib Lucky Charm on October 19, 2026; the review had 14 likes and 2 comments when we read it.

What is the steel-nib Sailor Pro Gear?

A full-size Pro Gear fitted with the Casual L stainless steel nib, the hand-finished steel nib Sailor introduced on the Profit Casual L. Sailor North America’s text, on Dromgoole’s listing from May 29, 2026, calls the Lucky Charm 2 the very first Pro Gear with that nib.

Edition Code Look Nibs
Lucky Charm 2 (North American exclusive) 11-9700 Translucent clover-teal, antique gold plating EF, F, MF, M, B
KAMAWANU Fugu-tatewaku (limited, 400) 10-9895 Indigo with white pufferfish and rising bubbles F, MF, M
KAMAWANU Tsurumaru-ume (limited, 400) 10-9895 Ivory with red cranes and plum blossoms F, MF, M

On October 23, 2026 Goulet listed the Lucky Charm 2 at US$200 and the KAMAWANU editions at US$260. The Pen Addict says Sailor’s new steel-nib pens start around US$140 for the base model.

Is the steel nib as good as the gold one?

Sailor pitches it as a gold-nib feel at a lower price; the first full review is lukewarm on value. The Pen Addict’s Brad Dowdy wrote on October 19, 2026 that nothing is technically wrong with how the Lucky Charm performs, and that the Casual L nib reminded him of Sailor’s old HighAce Neo, but that the pen felt overpriced.

Sailor’s Japanese Professional Gear list, read the same week, shows only gold-nib full-size fountain pens: the gold-trim and silver-trim models from ¥77,000 (about US$487) and the Imperial Black and Pink Gold at ¥82,500 (about US$522). The steel-nib Pro Gear is so far a North American product.

Which Sailor Pro Gear size should you choose?

The full size for a larger hand or a bigger nib; the Slim for a smaller, lighter pen. Figures for the Slim come from our Sailor Pro Gear Slim guide.

Pro Gear (full size) Pro Gear Slim
Length capped 128.5 mm 123.3 mm
Weight 22–26 g 17 g
Nib (Japan) 21k large 21k medium
Japan list price ¥77,000 (about US$487) ¥66,000 (about US$418)

Sailor nibs run fine by Western standards; our Japanese vs Western nib sizes guide explains the difference.

Where is the Sailor Pro Gear made?

In Japan. Sailor North America’s text for the Lucky Charm 2 says it is proudly made in Japan, and Jenni Bick lists it as made in Japan. Sailor was founded in Kure, Hiroshima, in 1911; our Sailor history covers the company and its owner, PLUS.
