Notes on these facts
- Sakura Pigma Micron Pen (sizes 003–12): Made by Sakura Color Products Corporation (Osaka); sold in the US by Sakura of America. Made in Japan: Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin (read October 20, 2026). Sakura's Japanese product page for the Pigma 01 doesn't state a country. Digitec and Galaxus (Switzerland), cited earlier for Japan, blocked our access on that date. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Sakura's Japanese Pigma page says it developed Pigma, the first water-based pigment marker, in 1982; Wikipedia agrees. We found no separate Sakura date for the Micron name.
- Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner (0.4 mm): Made by Schwan-STABILO (Heroldsberg, Germany). Made in Germany: Most Digitec/Galaxus single-pen listings (for example violet) give Germany. A few Digitec listings for other colors, such as green and moss green, give China, so origin may vary by color. STABILO's German and US product pages don't state the country, and Icecat no longer shows it; Digitec and Galaxus blocked our reader when we rechecked on October 20, 2026. Source. Price: example listing. Released: From the Swiss retailer Manor's German-language copy: "Schon seit 1977 ist Europas Fineliner Nr. 1". STABILO's German site calls it "Europas Fineliner Nr. 1" but gives no launch date.
- Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pen (Ultra Fine 0.4 mm / Medium 0.7 mm / Bold 1.2 mm): Made by Newell Brands. Made in Mexico: Giant Food Stores' listing for the Medium black 2-pack says Made in Mexico. Distributors ADI Global (noting origin is subject to change) and OnTimeSupplies also list Mexico. Paper Mate's own site blocked our reader, so we couldn't check it there. Source. Price: example listing.
- uni PIN fineliner, 0.03 mm (PIN003-200): Made by Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). Country of manufacture not stated: The Swiss Post shop and Schleiper listings we read don't state a country, and we didn't find the PIN on Mitsubishi Pencil's Japanese site, so check the pen. Price: example listing.
- STAEDTLER pigment liner 308: Made by Staedtler Mars GmbH & Co. KG (Nuremberg). Made in Germany: STAEDTLER's German product page carries a Made in Germany badge for the pigment liner 308. Source.
- STAEDTLER triplus fineliner 334 (0.3 mm): Made by Staedtler Mars GmbH & Co. KG (Nuremberg). Made in Germany: STAEDTLER's German and French product pages carry a Made in Germany badge for the 334. Galaxus lists China and Germany as countries of origin for the single black pen and Germany for pink, so check the package. Source. Price: example listing.
- Pentel Sign Pen (S520): Made by ASTRUM Corporation (Tokyo), called Pentel Co., Ltd. until April 1, 2026; Pentel remains the brand. Made in Japan: Pentel of America's 2023–2024 product guide gives the S520's origin as Japan. Retailer spec sheets agree: Officeworks (Australia) lists Japan as the country of manufacture for the black 12-pack (S520-A) and the assorted 6-pack, Brock's Compass (UK) lists Japan for the red S520-B, and Aztek (US) lists Japan for the black S520A dozen. Digitec (Switzerland) lists China for the violet S520-V, so origin may vary by color or market. Pentel's Japanese product page doesn't state it. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Pentel's Japanese product page and design archive both give 1963.

- Three use pigment ink sold as waterproof: the Pigma Micron, uni PIN and STAEDTLER pigment liner 308; the Point 88 and triplus use water-based ink that isn't.
- The Stabilo Point 88 comes in 65 colors, the most of the seven; STAEDTLER's German site lists 40 for the triplus fineliner.
- STAEDTLER says the triplus can lie uncapped for days without drying out, except the neon colors.
- All seven sit in our lowest price band, $ (under $5 per pen).
What is the best fineliner pen?
The Sakura Pigma Micron is the best fineliner pen for most people, but the best pick for many colors, a low price, an ultra-fine Japanese tip, waterproof drafting, leaving the cap off or a bold line is a different pen. Picks are based on published specs and maker claims; we haven’t tested them yet.
- Best for archival drawing: Sakura Pigma Micron. Sakura sells its pigment ink as archival, waterproof and fade resistant, in ten black sizes from 003 (0.15 mm) to 12 (0.70 mm).
- Best for everyday color: Stabilo Point 88. STABILO lists 65 colors for its 0.4 mm metal-encased tip, and its German site gives a single pen at €1.10 (about US$1.20).
- Cheapest everyday pick: Paper Mate Flair, Ultra Fine. A 0.4 mm felt point, sold in 12- to 36-count packs at Walmart and grocery stores, where the per-pen cost is lowest.
- Best Japanese ultra-fine: uni PIN 003. Mitsubishi Pencil’s uni brand labels it 0.03 mm, with pigment ink the Swiss Post shop calls waterproof and lightfast, at CHF 2.90 (about US$3.50) a pen in Switzerland.
- Best waterproof: STAEDTLER pigment liner 308. STAEDTLER calls its pigment ink document-proof and waterproof on paper, made in Germany, with a long metal tip for stencils and rulers.
- Best for leaving uncapped: STAEDTLER triplus fineliner. A 0.3 mm triangular pen that STAEDTLER says can lie open for days without drying out, neon colors excepted.
- Best bold line: Pentel Sign Pen (S520). A 2.0 mm acrylic fiber tip in a metal sleeve that writes about 0.8 to 1.0 mm, ¥165 (about US$1.00) in Japan.
How do the seven fineliners compare?
They split into pigment-ink drawing pens, which resist water, and water-based color pens, which don’t.

Line widths are maker labels, not our measurements. Origins are from maker and retailer listings; some colors of the Point 88 and triplus are listed as made in China.
Pigment or water-based ink: which do you need?
Pigment ink if you’ll paint, marker or erase over your lines; water-based ink for notes and color-coding. Pigment sits on top of the paper as particles, so a dry line survives a wash, while water-based ink re-wets and bleeds.
Water-based pens win on color: the Point 88 and triplus come in dozens of shades, while pigment drawing pens are mostly black.
Which fineliner has the finest tip?
The uni PIN 003, labeled 0.03 mm, followed by 0.05 mm sizes in the STAEDTLER pigment liner range. Size labels aren’t standardized: Sakura sells its smallest Micron, 003, as a 0.15 mm line.
Ultra-fine tips are delicate, so hold the pen upright and press lightly. A crafter testing five black fineliners in May 2026 found a 0.1 mm tip of another brand bent under heavy pressure.
Which fineliner is the most waterproof?
On maker claims, the STAEDTLER pigment liner 308: STAEDTLER calls it document-proof (to ISO 14145-2), lightfast and waterproof on paper. Sakura makes similar claims for Micron, and retailers for the uni PIN.
Independent results are mixed. In The Happy Ever Crafter’s test, none of these three smudged under water on Bristol board, but the pigment liner faded under marker and an eraser, and the Micron dulled a watercolor wash.
What do other reviewers recommend?
Reviewers keep returning to the Micron, with the uni PIN as the cheaper equal.
- The Pen Addict (Jeff Abbott, May 1, 2024) found the uni PIN and Micron hard to tell apart, the PIN about 30% cheaper, and the PIN darker and smoother than the triplus.
- The Happy Ever Crafter (May 15, 2026) tested five black fineliners for mixed media and picked the Tombow Mono drawing pen; she found it and the uni PIN handled watercolor better than the Micron she had used for years.
Where are these fineliners made?
Five of the seven are listed as made in Germany or Japan by their makers or retailers, the Flair in Mexico, and the uni PIN’s origin isn’t stated. Retailer listings show some Point 88 and triplus colors made in China, so check the pack.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fineliner for drawing?
The Sakura Pigma Micron. Sakura sells its pigment ink as archival, waterproof and fade resistant, and the black pen comes in ten sizes from 003 (0.15 mm) to 12 (0.70 mm), enough for hatching and outlines.
What is the finest fineliner tip you can buy?
The uni PIN 003 is labeled 0.03 mm, and the STAEDTLER pigment liner range starts at 0.05 mm. Nominal sizes aren't measured line widths: the Micron 003 is sold as 0.15 mm.
Which fineliners are waterproof?
Pigment-ink fineliners: the Sakura Pigma Micron, uni PIN and STAEDTLER pigment liner 308, whose maker calls it document-proof and waterproof on paper. Water-based fineliners such as the Stabilo Point 88 and STAEDTLER triplus are not waterproof.
What is the best fineliner for colorful notes?
The Stabilo Point 88, with 65 colors and a 0.4 mm metal-encased tip. The STAEDTLER triplus is the alternative at 0.3 mm, with a triangular barrel and ink that STAEDTLER says survives days uncapped.
Is the Paper Mate Flair a fineliner?
It's a felt tip pen rather than a technical fineliner, but its Ultra Fine 0.4 mm point writes a fineliner-width line. Paper Mate calls the ink water-based and smear-resistant, not waterproof.
Is the uni PIN as good as the Micron?
The Pen Addict's Jeff Abbott (May 1, 2024) found it hard to tell them apart in writing, and said the PIN cost about 30% less. A crafter's mixed-media test found the PIN shed a little ink under water, while the Micron dulled a watercolor wash slightly.
Do fineliners dry out if left uncapped?
Many can, so cap them between sessions. STAEDTLER claims its triplus fineliner can lie open for days without drying out, except the neon colors.
