Notes on these facts
Made in Germany: Goldspot's AL Sport spec sheet says "Made in Germany", and Boston General Store also lists Germany. Kaweco's German product pages say all its nibs are made in Germany; its site didn't load for us on October 21, 2026, so we read those pages through search results. Source. Price: example listing.

Key takeaways
Kaweco's German site lists the AL Sport at 10.7 cm (4.2 in) closed, 12.7 cm (5.0 in) open, 13 mm across and 20.5 g; Goulet Pens measures 22.0 g.

It takes short international cartridges, about 0.97 ml, or a Kaweco mini converter, about 0.67 ml per Goulet.
Kaweco's German shop lists it at €74.50 (about US$83); US listings put it in our $$$$ band, over $75.
What is the Kaweco AL Sport?
The AL Sport is the aluminium version of the Kaweco Sport: the same short octagonal-cap pocket pen, machined from aluminium instead of molded plastic. It fits a pocket capped and becomes a normal-length pen when you post the cap.
It is one of the pens fountain pen shops sell most: Goulet Pens’ best-seller roundup names “the Kaweco AL Sports” among the pens competing in the same price tier as the TWSBI Diamond 580, and The Journal Shop’s guide to pens under £100 (about US$132) picks it for pockets.

Kaweco’s German pages give slightly different lengths in different places (10.5 or 10.7 cm closed, 12.7 or 13 cm open), as they do for the Classic Sport; we give the spec-table figures and Goulet’s measurements.
Posting the 70 mm cap adds about 27 mm, per Goulet's figures.
How is the AL Sport different from the Classic Sport?
It is the same size and shape but about twice as heavy, because the body and cap are aluminium.
Classic Sport figures come from its guide. For an even smaller metal Kaweco, see the Kaweco Liliput. The plastic Kaweco Lunar Sport borrows the AL Sport’s screw-in 060 nib unit at the Classic Sport’s price.
Kaweco offers five steel nibs, EF, F, M, B and BB, in German sizing, so its F writes wider than a Japanese F. Choose EF or F for a pocket notebook and M for general writing.
The AL Sport comes in a long list of anodized colors; Goldspot and Goulet Pens list Grey Anthracite, Silver, Deep Red, Iguana Blue, Vibrant Violet and the polished Raw finish, among others.
What ink does the AL Sport use?
It takes short international cartridges or Kaweco’s mini converter; long cartridges don’t fit the short barrel. Goulet Pens lists about 0.97 ml in a cartridge and 0.67 ml in the converter, so cartridges hold more.
Don’t convert it to an eyedropper: Wonder Pens warns that aluminium can react with ink, as our how to clean a fountain pen guide notes.
Is the AL Sport a good pocket pen?
Yes: at about 10.5 cm capped it fits a shirt or jeans pocket, and the metal body adds heft without adding length. Without a clip it drops to the bottom of a pocket, so many owners add one; see our best pocket pens for other options.
Where is the Kaweco AL Sport made?
Goldspot’s spec sheet says “Made in Germany”, and Kaweco says all its nibs are made in Germany. Kaweco’s own site didn’t load for us on October 21, 2026, so we read its German product pages through search results.
How much does a Kaweco AL Sport cost?
The AL Sport is in our $$$$ price band, over $75 per pen, at the low end, based on the US listings we checked in October 2026, such as Goldspot and Goulet Pens. Kaweco’s German shop lists most colors at €74.50 (about US$83) and the Stonewashed Blue at €84.50 (about US$95); the clip and converter are extra.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Kaweco AL Sport and the Classic Sport?
The AL Sport is machined aluminium instead of plastic, so it weighs about twice as much: 20.5 g against 10.7 g on Kaweco's German spec tables. The size, cap shape, nibs and cartridges are the same.
How heavy is the Kaweco AL Sport?
Kaweco's German site lists 20.5 g for the Anthracite EF pen and 21 g on another listing; Goulet Pens measures 22.0 g, with 9 g of that in the cap.
Does the Kaweco AL Sport come with a clip?
No. Goldspot says the clip is sold separately; Kaweco's slide-on Sport clips fit both the AL Sport and the Classic Sport.
Can you turn a Kaweco AL Sport into an eyedropper pen?
Wonder Pens advises against it: aluminium can react with ink, so use cartridges or the mini converter instead.
What cartridges does the Kaweco AL Sport use?
Short standard international cartridges. Goulet Pens lists about 0.97 ml per cartridge and 0.67 ml with Kaweco's mini converter, sold separately.
Is the Kaweco AL Sport made in the USA?
No. Goldspot's spec sheet says it is made in Germany, and Kaweco says all its nibs are made there.
Is the Kaweco AL Sport worth it over the Classic Sport?
If you want a metal pocket pen with more heft in the hand, yes; it costs roughly three times as much at Kaweco's German list prices, so the plastic Classic is the better first pen.
What colors does the Kaweco AL Sport come in?
Kaweco's own shop lists seven AL Sport fountain pen colors: Anthracite, Black, Deep Red, Raw, Rose Gold, Silver and Stonewashed Blue. All are anodized or raw aluminium with the same octagonal cap.
