What is the best multi pen?
On published specs, the uni Jetstream 4&1 is the best multi pen for most people, with the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto and uni Style Fit as the build-your-own picks and the FriXion Synergy 3 as the erasable one. A multi pen holds two to five refills in one body, chosen with slide levers, a twist or a clip knock. Every pick here sits in our $$ band ($5–20 per pen) except the single-color bLen, which we include because Zebra’s bLen 3C multi version isn’t sold in the US. The 4&1 is #1 because it’s the only pick with a pencil built in, and it arrives loaded with four Jetstream colors.
Best overall:uni Jetstream 4&1. Why it’s here: the only pick with a pencil built in, plus black, red, blue and green Jetstream ballpoints in a 148.8 mm (5.9 in) body; ¥1,100 (about US$7) in Japan.
Best build-your-own gel:Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto. Why it’s here: the widest gel choice: an empty 2- to 5-slot body you fill from 33 gel colors, pencil units and an eraser unit.
Best for mixing gel and ballpoint:uni Style Fit. Why it’s here: the only holder that mixes Signo gel and Jetstream ballpoint refills, with pencil units too, in 3, 4 or 5 colors.
Best erasable:Pilot FriXion Synergy 3. Why it’s here: the only erasable pick, three 0.4 mm FriXion gel inks in a 145 mm, 13 g body.
Best pigment gel:uni-ball One 3. Why it’s here: the only pigment-gel pick, black, red and blue uni-ball One ink in a stubby 129 mm twist body.
Best single pen to pair with a multi:Zebra bLen. Why it’s here: Zebra’s low-vibration bLen 3C and 4+S multi versions stay in Japan, so the single pen is the way to get its feel in the US.
How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ Japanese specs and refill codes, retailer listings, US availability and price band. We chose by ink and by whether you want fixed colors or to build your own, and kept pens sold in the US.
How do the multi pens compare?
The Jetstream 4&1 is the only pick with a pencil built in; the Coleto and Style Fit let you choose every slot. Figures come from each pen’s guide, the makers’ where published.

Fixed colors or build your own?
Buy a fixed pen if you want black, red and blue; build your own if you care which colors and tip sizes go in. The Jetstream 4&1 and FriXion Synergy 3 arrive loaded and refill with one code per color. The Coleto and Style Fit are sold empty: Pilot counts 66 Coleto refills and units, and Mitsubishi Pencil offers 16 Style Fit gel colors in three sizes plus Jetstream and pencil refills.
The cost works out differently. A loaded 4&1 is ¥1,100 (about US$7) in Japan, and each SXR-80 refill ¥110 (about US$0.70), about 10% of the pen.
A Style Fit holder is ¥220 (about US$1.40), but three gel refills add ¥330 (about US$2.10), so the refills cost more than the body. Our pen refills guide covers the formats.
Which multi pen refill formats are shared?
Almost none of them. The SXR-80 fits only Jetstream multi pens and the uni-ball &knot, the Coleto refill only Coleto bodies, and the UMR-109 only Style Fit holders. The one shared standard among multi pens is the 67 mm D1 refill used by Zebra’s 4C, Mitsubishi’s SXR-200 and LAMY’s M21, which none of the picks here use. Check the maker’s chart before buying a refill for a different body.
Which multi pen should you choose?
Match the ink to the paper and the job.
Fast notes on cheap paper: Jetstream 4&1. Oil-based ink dries fast and doesn’t feather on copy paper.
Color-coded study notes: Coleto with 0.4 mm gel refills, or Style Fit with 0.38 mm Signo refills.
Planner that changes: FriXion Synergy 3, so entries erase cleanly.
Dark, bold lines: uni-ball One 3, whose pigment ink Mitsubishi Pencil sells on its darkness.
A quiet single pen: Zebra bLen, with a metal weight in the grip to cut wobble.
Where are these multi pens made?
Mostly Japan, but only the Jetstream 4&1 has a stated country. The Journal Shop lists the 4&1 as made in Japan. Pilot, Mitsubishi Pencil and Zebra don’t print a country on the Coleto, Style Fit, FriXion Synergy 3, uni-ball One 3 or bLen pages we read, so those read “Not stated” in the facts box until a retailer spec sheet or the packaging settles it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best multi-color pen for note taking?
The uni Jetstream 4&1 for ballpoint ink that dries fast, or the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto for gel ink in exactly the colors you want. Students who erase should look at the FriXion Synergy 3, whose three 0.4 mm inks rub out with the end eraser.
What is the difference between a multi pen and a build-your-own pen?
A fixed multi pen such as the Jetstream 4&1 comes loaded with set colors and you replace them with the same refills. A build-your-own pen such as the Coleto or Style Fit is sold as an empty body, and you buy each refill or pencil unit separately, so the colors and tip sizes are yours to choose.

Are Jetstream 4&1 refills the same as Jetstream RT refills?
