  • Made by Pilot Corporation (Japan); sold in the US by Pilot Corporation of America. Country of manufacture not stated: Pilot's Japanese catalog, its press releases and Goulet Pens don't state a country of manufacture. The pen is designed and sold by Pilot in Japan, but we found no spec sheet that lists the country of origin. Price: example listing. Released: Pilot's June 19, 2013 press release gives the Japanese launch date of the Elite 95S. The original Elite S launched in 1968 and its second generation in 1974.
  • Colors: names per Goulet Pens, checked October 24, 2026. US colors per Goulet Pens, which describes Burgundy/Ivory as a burgundy barrel with an ivory cap. Hoozuki, Fuji, Sakura and the limited Ai are Japan colors from Pilot's September 9, 2026 press release (on sale October 2026). Tints were sampled from Goulet Pens' and Pilot's product photos. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.
  • Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).

Key takeaways

  • Pilot launched the Elite 95S in Japan on June 25, 2013, a revival of the 1974 second-generation Elite S; the first Elite S came out in 1968.
  • It measures 119 mm (4.7 in) capped and 147 mm (5.8 in) posted, with a 12.9 mm maximum diameter, per Pilot Japan.
  • Goulet Pens measures an 80 mm cap and a 105 mm body, so the cap covers more than half the pen when closed.
  • The 14k gold nib comes in EF, F and M; Goulet lists 1.16 ml of ink in a cartridge and 0.87 ml in the included CON-40 converter.
  • Pilot Japan lists it at ¥33,000 (about US$209) including tax; it was ¥10,500 (about US$66) at its 2013 launch.

What is the Pilot E95S?

It’s a short pocket fountain pen with a long cap that posts, so it carries small and writes full size. Pilot sells it in Japan as the Elite 95S. Pilot launched it on June 25, 2013 as a revival of the second-generation Elite S of 1974; the first Elite S of 1968 was, Pilot says, a big hit as a gift for students and new employees.

Pilot sized the closed pen to fit the depth of a dress-shirt pocket and kept the weight to 15 g so it doesn’t drag the pocket down.

Pilot and Goulet agree on the 119 and 147 mm lengths. Their weights differ because Pilot weighs the body alone, while Goulet weighs the body with converter and the cap separately.

Posting the long cap adds 28 mm and turns the pocket pen into a full-size one.

What is special about the inlaid nib?

The 14k gold nib is set into the section rather than sticking out from it, which gives the E95S its 1970s look. Pilot offers Extra Fine, Fine and Medium. Japanese nib sizes run finer than European ones, so the F writes closer to a Western EF; see our Japanese vs Western nib sizes guide.

What ink and converter does it take?

It takes Pilot’s proprietary cartridges or the CON-40 converter that comes with it. Goulet measures 1.16 ml in a cartridge and 0.87 ml in the CON-40, so cartridges hold about a third more.

Any bottled fountain pen ink works with the converter; Pilot’s Iroshizuku inks, such as Kon-peki, are the natural match.

How does it compare to other pocket fountain pens?

The E95S is the gold-nib option; the Kaweco Sport is the steel-nib German classic.

What colors does the E95S come in?

In the US, Black and Burgundy/Ivory, each with gold trim. Goulet Pens and JetPens sell both in EF, F and M. Goulet describes the Burgundy/Ivory as a burgundy barrel with an ivory cap.

In Japan, Pilot sold Black and Deep Red at the 2013 launch. Its September 9, 2026 release added three soft colors for October 2026, Hoozuki (Chinese lantern orange), Fuji (wisteria) and Sakura (cherry blossom), plus a limited Ai (indigo), aimed at writing in small planners. Those are Japanese releases, so they may not reach US shops.

Who is the Pilot E95S for?

It suits people who want a gold-nib fountain pen they can actually carry every day. Closed, it’s shorter than most ballpoints, and the aluminum cap keeps the weight low enough for a shirt pocket.

It’s less suited to large hands that write unposted: the body alone is 105 mm, and the grip narrows to 9.3 mm per Goulet. If that’s you, a full-size pen such as the Custom 74 will feel more natural.

How much does the Pilot E95S cost?

It falls in our $$$$ band, over $75. Pilot’s Japanese list price has risen from ¥10,500 (about US$66) in 2013 to ¥33,000 (about US$209) today.

Where is the Pilot E95S made?

Pilot doesn’t state it, and we found no retailer spec sheet that does. It’s designed and sold by Pilot Corporation of Tokyo.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pilot E95S the same as the Elite 95S?

Yes. Pilot sells it in Japan as the Elite 95S (エリート95S, model FES-1MM) and US retailers such as Goulet Pens and JetPens list it as the Pilot E95S.

What converter fits the Pilot E95S?

The CON-40, which Pilot includes and lists for the pen. Goulet Pens measures 0.87 ml of ink in it, against 1.16 ml in a Pilot cartridge.

Does the E95S have a gold nib?

Yes, a 14k gold nib that sits inlaid in the section, in Extra Fine, Fine or Medium. Pilot doesn't offer other nib sizes for it.

Is the Pilot E95S too small to write with?

Capped it's only 119 mm, but Pilot designed the long cap to post: with the cap on the back it becomes a standard 147 mm pen.

Is the Pilot E95S made in the USA?

No. It's a Pilot Corporation pen from Japan; Pilot doesn't publish the country of manufacture, and we found no retailer spec sheet that lists it.

Can you use bottled ink in the Pilot E95S?

Yes, through the CON-40 converter that comes with the pen, which takes any bottled fountain pen ink. Pilot's own Iroshizuku inks, such as Kon-peki, are an obvious match.

Why is the Pilot E95S cap so long?

Because it's a pocket pen: Pilot sized the closed pen to the depth of a shirt pocket, then made the cap long enough to post deep and stay put.
