Key takeaways
Seven of the eight picks sit in our $ band (under $5 per pen); only the uni Jetstream Edge, ¥1,100 (about US$7) in Japan, is $$ ($5–20).
Tip sizes run from 0.25 mm (Pentel Slicci, Hi-Tec-C 0.25) through 0.28 mm (Signo DX, Signo RT1, Jetstream Edge) to 0.3 mm (Sarasa Nano, Sarasa Clip) and 0.38 mm (Juice, Signo DX).
Pilot lists the Juice 05's line at 0.31 mm wide, a reminder that tip size and line width differ; a 0.38 mm gel pen draws a line near 0.25 mm.
The Signo DX offers 31 colors in 0.38 mm and 17 in 0.28 mm; the Sarasa Nano rides its refill on a spring that Zebra says absorbs the scratch of a fine tip.
All but the Slicci and Hi-Tec-C refill: UMR-1 (Signo DX), JF (Sarasa Nano and Clip), LP2RF (Juice), UMR-82/83 (Signo RT1) and SXR-203-28 (Jetstream Edge).

How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ specs and claims (Japanese sites first), retailer listings, US availability and price band. We set fine at 0.38 mm and under, then chose on tip size, ink, colors and whether the pen is capped or retracts.
How do the fine-tip pens compare?
Three are capped, five retract; only the Jetstream Edge is a ballpoint. Figures come from each pen’s guide.

Tip size or line width?
Tip size is the ball; line width is what lands on paper, and it’s smaller. Pilot measures the Juice 05’s line at 0.31 mm, so a 0.38 mm gel pen writes nearer 0.25 mm, and a 0.28 mm tip nearer 0.2 mm. Pressure, paper and ink flow move those numbers.
Needle tips such as the Hi-Tec-C and Slicci let you see the point as you write, which helps with ruled forms. Conical tips such as the Signo DX and Juice are sturdier and less likely to bend if dropped.
Capped or retractable?
Capped pens keep the finest tips wet longer; retractables are faster to use. The Signo DX, Hi-Tec-C and Slicci are capped, which protects a 0.25 to 0.3 mm point and seals the ink. The Sarasa Nano, Juice, Sarasa Clip, Signo RT1 and Jetstream Edge click, and all five refill, so they cost less over time.
Gel ink in these sizes takes a few seconds to dry. If that matters, the Jetstream Edge is the one oil-based pick, and our pens that don’t smudge guide covers the rest.
Which fine-tip pen should you choose?
Match the tip to your letter height and the pen to your habit.
Planner rows and marginalia: Signo DX 0.38 or Juice 0.38.
Letters under 3 mm tall: Slicci 0.25, Signo DX 0.28 or Signo RT1 0.28.
Scratch-free fine writing: Sarasa Nano 0.3.
Cheapest 0.3 mm: Sarasa Clip.
Color coding: Signo DX, 31 colors in 0.38 mm.
Left-handed or glossy paper: Jetstream Edge.
Where are these fine-tip pens made?
Japan, where stated. Retailer spec sheets give Japan for the Hi-Tec-C, Slicci, Sarasa Clip and Jetstream Edge. Mitsubishi Pencil, Zebra and Pilot don’t print a country on the Signo DX, Sarasa Nano, Juice or Signo RT1 pages we read, so those read “Not stated” until the packaging settles it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pen for very small handwriting?
The uni-ball Signo DX in 0.28 mm or the Pilot Hi-Tec-C in 0.3 mm, both capped gel pens with pigment ink that stays crisp. If you want a retractable, the Zebra Sarasa Nano 0.3 mm or Signo RT1 0.28 mm. For planners with narrow rows, the 0.25 mm Pentel Slicci is the finest.
What is the finest pen you can buy?
Among common gel pens, 0.25 mm: the Pentel Slicci BG202 and the Pilot Hi-Tec-C 0.25, which Pilot no longer lists but some shops still sell. Among ballpoints, the uni Jetstream Edge's 0.28 mm ball, which Mitsubishi Pencil called the smallest on an oil-based pen at launch.
Is a 0.38 mm pen fine enough for small writing?
For most people, yes. Pilot measures the Juice 05's line at 0.31 mm, so a 0.38 mm tip draws closer to a quarter of a millimeter. The 0.38 mm Signo DX comes in 31 colors and is the usual planner pick; drop to 0.28 or 0.3 mm only if your letters are under 3 mm tall.
Why do fine-tip pens feel scratchy?
A small ball has less surface to glide on, so it catches paper fibers. Zebra's Sarasa Nano puts the refill on a spring to cushion that, Mitsubishi Pencil rounds off the tip rim on the Signo RT1, and smoother paper such as Rhodia helps any of them.
Which fine-tip pens are refillable?
The Signo DX (UMR-1 family), Sarasa Nano and Sarasa Clip (JF refills), Juice (LP2RF), Signo RT1 (UMR-82 for 0.28 mm, UMR-83 for 0.38 mm) and Jetstream Edge (SXR-203-28). Pilot Japan offers no refill for the Hi-Tec-C, and Pentel lists the Slicci as nonrefillable.
Do fine gel pens skip?
They can, especially on rough paper or with old ink. Pigment gels such as the Signo DX, Juice and Signo RT1 are less prone to it than dye gels. The Jetstream Edge's oil-based ink skips least but writes a lighter line than gel.
Which fine-tip pen comes in the most colors?
The uni-ball Signo DX, with 31 colors in 0.38 mm and 17 each in 0.28 and 0.5 mm. The Pilot Juice has 48 standard colors but only some in 0.38 mm, and the Sarasa Nano 15 in 0.3 mm.
Are fine-tip pens good for left-handed writers?
The Jetstream Edge is, because oil-based ink dries almost at once. Gel pens take a few seconds, so left-handers should try the Juice or Signo DX on smooth paper first, or see our guide to pens that don't smudge.
