Country of manufacture not stated: Pilot's US product page and Pilot Japan's catalog don't state the country, and the Amazon listing for item 31450 we read on October 20, 2026 gives none. An earlier version of this guide cited Japan from McKesson and OnTimeSupplies listings, but on October 20, 2026 the McKesson page required a business login and the OnTimeSupplies page was gone, so we couldn't confirm it. Price: example listing.

Pilot USA says erasable pens are not recommended for legal or official documents.
What is the best erasable pen?
For most people, the best erasable pen is the Pilot FriXion Clicker, a retractable gel pen that erases cleanly with the rubber tip on its end. The other picks cover small handwriting, ballpoint fans and highlighting. It’s #1 because it retracts and comes in two tip sizes and 15 colors with refills, more choice than the other FriXion picks.
Best overall:Pilot FriXion Clicker. Why it’s here: it retracts, erases cleanly with its rubber tip, and comes in 0.7 mm Fine and 1.0 mm Bold in 15 colors per Pilot USA, with 3-pack refills.
Small handwriting:Pilot FriXion Synergy Clicker. Why it’s here: Pilot’s fine Synergy Tip on a FriXion body, a finer line than the Clicker for small writing; Pilot USA sells one Extra Fine point in 5 colors.
Ballpoint: Paper Mate EraserMate. Why it’s here: the only pick whose ink rubs off rather than turning clear in heat, so a hot car won’t erase it; a 1.0 mm ballpoint and the budget pick in Bustle’s roundup.
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: Pilot’s and Paper Mate’s specs and claims, the JetPens and Bustle reviews we cite, US availability and price band. Every pick sits in our $ band, so we chose on how each erases, its tip size and how easy it is to buy in the US.
How do these erasable pens compare?
Three use Pilot’s heat-sensitive FriXion ink; the EraserMate is the only one that rubs ink off the page.

How do FriXion pens erase?
Friction heat makes the ink turn colorless: Pilot says FriXion ink goes invisible above 60 °C (140 °F). Rubbing the rubber tip warms the line past that point; nothing is lifted off the paper.
The three temperatures Pilot publishes for FriXion ink, on one scale.
The same thing happens by accident. Pilot warns that a hot car or a heater can erase FriXion notes, and that erased writing begins to come back below about −10 °C (14 °F), fully at about −20 °C (−4 °F).
Which FriXion should you buy?
Buy the Clicker for everyday notes and the Synergy Clicker if you write small. Pilot launched the Synergy Knock in Japan on March 4, 2024, adding a 0.3 mm tip, the finest in the FriXion range; Pilot Japan lists it at ¥275 (about US$1.70). If you also need a permanent ink in the same body, Pilot’s 2026 FriXion Ball Switch adds an oil-based black to three FriXion colors.
The Clicker’s 0.7 mm Fine is the size most planners use, and its US refills, 77330 black and 77331 blue, also fit the capped FriXion Ball. Its Japanese twin, the FriXion Ball Knock 07, is listed at 146 mm and 11.8 g.
Only if you want ink that stays put in heat; it erases less cleanly. The EraserMate’s ink is removed by abrasion, like pencil, so a hot car won’t touch it. A JetPens reviewer found FriXion erased more easily but ran out faster than EraserMates.
Retailer listings describe the EraserMate’s ink as wiping cleanly away with an eraser; how long it stays erasable isn’t stated on a page we could read, so erase mistakes promptly.
What shouldn’t you use an erasable pen for?
Anything that must last or must not change: checks, contracts, exams and addresses. Pilot USA says erasable pens are not recommended for legal or official documents.
For permanent writing, use a pigment gel pen; our best gel pens roundup names one for checks. For a planner you rewrite often, FriXion is still the easiest choice.
Where are these pens made?
Only the EraserMate has a stated origin: two US distributors list Mexico for its black 12-pack. Pilot’s US and Japanese pages don’t state a country for the FriXion pens, so check the pack you buy; our EraserMate guide has the details.
Frequently asked questions
Are erasable pens allowed on checks or legal forms?
Don't use them. Pilot USA says erasable pens are not recommended for legal or official documents, and FriXion writing can vanish from heat alone. Use a pigment gel pen such as the uni-ball Signo 207 for checks.
Can erased FriXion ink come back?
Yes. Pilot Japan says erased FriXion writing starts to reappear below about −10 °C (14 °F), for example in a freezer, and is fully back at about −20 °C (−4 °F).
Why did my FriXion notes disappear in the car?
Heat. FriXion ink turns invisible above 60 °C (140 °F), so a hot car or a laminator can erase a page without any rubbing. Cooling it in a freezer may bring the writing back.
Do FriXion pens erase on any paper?
They work on ordinary writing paper because the rubber tip only has to warm the line past 60 °C (140 °F). Rub lightly on thin or soft paper, which can scuff before the ink fades.
Is the EraserMate a gel pen?
No. School Specialty lists it as a 1.0 mm ballpoint with pressurized ink and a stainless steel ball, and the eraser sits in the cap. It writes at any angle, the listing says, but it erases by abrasion like pencil.
Which erasable pen is best for a planner?
A fine FriXion. The Synergy Clicker's fine tip suits small planner boxes, and Pilot sells the line in many colors; avoid leaving the planner somewhere hot.
Do FriXion refills fit the Synergy Clicker?
Not as far as retailers say. Staples lists the US 0.7 mm FriXion refills (77330 black, 77331 blue) as fitting the FriXion Ball, Clicker and LX, and doesn't name the Synergy Clicker.
