Honolulu or Honolulu B: which tips should you choose?

Pick the Honolulu (brush and chisel) to color large areas, and the Honolulu B (brush and fine) if you also outline and add small details. Both share the same round barrel, the same 344 colors and the same flexible brush. Ohuhu calls the Honolulu B great for beginners.

Parka Blogs prefers the brush for illustration, because it can paint details and cover areas, and suggests the chisel-and-fine Oahu series for layout and presentation work. For water-based color instead, Ohuhu’s Maui markers pair a brush with a 0.4 mm fineliner. You can tell the ends apart by the holder color: gray for the brush, white for the chisel.

One chisel covers a 1 to 6 mm range; the brush varies with pressure.

What paper should you use with Ohuhu markers?

Use marker paper or heavy mixed-media paper, and put a spare sheet underneath on anything thinner. Ohuhu says its dye ink soaks into paper and recommends thicker paper, such as its own marker pads; on regular paper it advises a backing sheet to stop bleed-through.

A pad made for alcohol markers, such as the Canson XL Marker pad, keeps colors brighter and the back of the page clean.

Can you refill Ohuhu Honolulu markers?

Yes: Ohuhu sells 16 ml alcohol ink bottles for the Honolulu, Oahu, Kaala and Molokai series, plus replacement brush tips. That makes the Honolulu a marker you can keep rather than throw away when it runs dry.

Not every color has a refill. When Parka Blogs reviewed the markers, refills covered 51 colors, so check before relying on a favorite shade.

How does the Honolulu compare to Copic?

The Copic Sketch has more colors, sells replacement nibs and has refills for every color; the Honolulu gives you many more colors for the same money.

Parka Blogs, comparing them, wrote it would get about twice as many colors from Ohuhu for the same money, with ink of similar quality. Our best alcohol markers roundup adds the Copic Ciao, Prismacolor and Arteza; for water-based brush markers, see the Tombow Dual Brush Pen.

Ohuhu’s chisel-and-fine line is the Ohuhu Oahu, whose 40-color set has over 15,000 Amazon ratings.

Frequently asked questions

What do Ohuhu's new color codes mean?

Ohuhu has renumbered its alcohol markers by color family. Its FAQ says ink, design and nibs are unchanged, and it publishes a chart and lookup tool that map old codes to new ones.

Why doesn't the cap color match the ink exactly?

Ohuhu says the caps are colored with pigments and resin while the ink is dye, so the cap is only a rough guide. Each set comes with a swatch card for a truer preview.

Are Ohuhu markers lightfast?

No. The ink is dye-based, and Ohuhu advises keeping work out of direct sunlight and strong UV. Parka Blogs recommends scanning finished art you want to keep.

How should you store Ohuhu markers?

Capped and away from heat and flames, since the ink is alcohol-based, per Ohuhu. Parka Blogs adds that lying them flat keeps ink reaching both tips.

Who owns the Ohuhu brand?

Ohuhu's imprint page names Ohuhu Inc. of Newark, California, as its US company and Thousandshores Deutschland GmbH in Hamburg as its EU seller.

Does the 48-color Honolulu set include a blender?

Yes. Ohuhu lists the 48-color set with 48 colors plus one colorless blender, which lightens and softens edges.
