What is the Platinum Preppy?

The Preppy is Platinum Pen’s clear plastic cartridge fountain pen, made to be cheap enough to buy like a ballpoint. Platinum Pen Co., Ltd. of Tokyo launched it in 2007, and All About reported a launch price of ¥210 (about US$1.30).

In an October 2014 release, Platinum called the Preppy the world’s best-selling ultra-low-price fountain pen, with about 5.3 million shipped by then. It says the Preppy passed 15 million pens sold in April 2024. Both are the maker’s figures.

It’s the cheapest of the starter fountain pens we cover, with the Pilot Kakuno, Pilot Metropolitan, LAMY safari and TWSBI ECO.

At 138 mm capped the Preppy is a full-size pen; for one that fits a jeans pocket, see our best pocket pens roundup.

What do the 02, 03 and 05 nibs mean?

The number is the nib size: 02 is Extra Fine, 03 is Fine and 05 is Medium. Cult Pens gives the 03 as a 0.3 mm line, and the 05 writes about 0.5 mm. Platinum added the 02 on October 25, 2014, at ¥300 (about US$1.90) before tax against ¥200 (about US$1.30) for the 03 and 05. Today all three list at ¥660 (about US$4.20) including tax.

  • 02 Extra Fine: small handwriting, planners and cheaper paper.
  • 03 Fine: the usual first choice; The Journal Shop says it comes in the most body colors.
  • 05 Medium: a wetter, bolder line; best on smooth paper such as a Rhodia DotPad.

Japanese nibs usually run finer than Western ones of the same name, though one retailer says the 05 writes more like a European Medium.

What does Slip & Seal do?

Slip & Seal is Platinum’s sealed inner cap, which Platinum says keeps the ink from drying out for a year. The seal sits inside the cap and closes around the nib when you cap the pen. ASCII’s 2014 review named it the pen’s main advantage: you can pick it up after a year and it still writes.

What cartridges and converter does the Preppy use?

It takes Platinum’s own cartridges, and it comes with one. For bottled ink, fit a Platinum converter, sold separately. Standard international cartridges need Platinum’s international adapter, per The Journal Shop.

Goulet Pens says the barrel can also be used as an eyedropper, filled straight from the bottle, if you add an O-ring and a little silicone grease to the threads.

How does the Preppy compare to other starter fountain pens?

The Preppy is the cheapest and simplest; the others cost more but feel sturdier.

Frequently asked questions

What do the Preppy nib numbers 02, 03 and 05 mean?

They are nib sizes. 02 is Extra Fine, 03 is Fine (a 0.3 mm line, per Cult Pens) and 05 is Medium (about 0.5 mm). Japanese nib sizes usually run finer than Western ones of the same name.

What is Slip & Seal on the Platinum Preppy?

It's Platinum's sealed inner cap, which closes around the nib when the pen is capped. Platinum says it keeps the ink in a fitted cartridge from drying out for a year, so the pen writes even after long gaps.

What cartridges does the Platinum Preppy take?

Platinum's own proprietary cartridges, and it comes with one. You can also fit a Platinum converter, sold separately, for bottled ink; standard international cartridges need Platinum's adapter.

Can you turn a Preppy into an eyedropper pen?

Yes. Goulet Pens says the barrel can be filled directly with ink if you add an O-ring and a little silicone grease to the threads, which holds much more ink than a cartridge.
