What is the Visconti Mirage Mythos?

It’s the most affordable full-size Visconti fountain pen: a faceted resin pen with a magnetic cap and a large steel nib, in colors named after the Greek gods. Visconti’s Italian shop calls it the company’s tribute to classical culture and the deities of Olympus, available in many color and trim variants.

It’s selling well in the US. On October 22, 2026 the Poseidon color was 24th on Goulet Pens’ best-seller list, where 16 buyers had rated it 4.75 out of 5.

Visconti Mirage Mythos drawn to scale: 139.3 mm capped, 123 mm uncapped and 159 mm posted, 32 g
Posting the magnetic cap adds about 36 mm to the body, per Goulet's measurements.

How does the magnetic cap work?

Magnets pull the cap into short notched threads, so it closes with a small twist instead of several turns. Goulet calls it a magnetic twist closure, and Visconti’s page lists the closure simply as magnetic.

The Pen Addict’s reviewer found the seal good: her pen never dried out between uses. The cap also posts by magnet, but less securely; she noticed a slight rattle while writing, and a Goulet customer reported the same jiggle.

What nib does the Mirage Mythos use?

A large #6 stainless steel nib, which Goulet says is made by Schmidt in Germany. Visconti offers it in fine, medium and broad, plated in yellow gold or in dark ruthenium to match the trim.

The Pen Addict’s reviewer called her nib smooth, with well-balanced wetness. Steel nibs vary from pen to pen, so we’ll write our own samples before rating it.

Which Mirage Mythos color should you choose?

Pick by color and trim; the pen underneath is the same. Visconti’s Italian shop lists nine colors.

  • Poseidon: sandblasted dark sea blue with ruthenium nib and trim, the first in the line with dark trim (Goulet).
  • Athena: turquoise with pink, rust and purple swirls, brass-toned trim and a gold-colored nib (The Pen Addict).
  • Odysseus, Hades, Aphrodite, Apollo, Zeus, Demeter and Persephone: the other seven named colors, each with its own resin.

Each pen’s swirl pattern is unique, Goulet notes, so the pen you receive won’t match the photos exactly.

How does it compare with other Visconti pens?

It sits between the plain Mirage and the lava Homo Sapiens. Prices are Visconti Italy’s list prices, including 22% VAT, on October 22, 2026.

Mirage Mirage Mythos Homo Sapiens Lava Bronze
Code KP09 KP07 KP15
List price €170 (about US$190) €220 (about US$246) €900 (about US$1,008)

Filling Cartridge or converter Cartridge or converter Power filler (vacuum)
Body Resin Resin Etna lava and resin

The Homo Sapiens is the pen to choose for a gold nib and a large ink capacity; the Mirage Mythos is the one to choose for color. Our Homo Sapiens vs Mirage Mythos comparison goes through the differences. For other high-end picks, see our best luxury pens.

What cartridges and converters fit?

Any standard international cartridge, short or long, plus the converter that comes with the pen. Goulet measured 1.77 ml in a long cartridge and 1.18 ml in the converter.

That makes it one of the easiest luxury pens to keep inked, since standard international cartridges come from many brands; our guide to filling a fountain pen explains the sizes. For line widths across brands, see fountain pen nib sizes.

Where is the Visconti Mirage Mythos made?

Visconti is based in Florence and says its pens are handmade there, but the steel nib is German. The Mirage Mythos product page doesn’t name a country, so we rely on Visconti’s general statement and on Goulet, which says Schmidt makes the nib in Germany.
