Key takeaways
Pilot sells Coleto bodies for 2, 3, 4 and 5 refills, plus the 4-color Coleto 500 and Coleto 1000; the 4-color body lists at ¥220 (about US$1.40).
Pilot Japan lists the 4-color body (LHKCG20C) at 149.9 mm (5.9 in) long, 13.2 mm wide and 9.2 g.
Pilot says there are 33 gel colors: 15 regular colors in 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm, plus 12 pastel and metallic colors in 0.4 mm.
Counting 0.3 and 0.5 mm pencil units and an eraser unit, Pilot puts the choice at 66 refills and units.
Pilot launched the Coleto in 2005 with a 2-color body and 20 refills, and calls it the original build-your-own pen.
What is the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto?
It is a multi pen sold empty: you choose the body and then each refill, so the colors, sizes and even a pencil are up to you. Pilot launched it in 2005 and calls it the original “choose and assemble” pen, a category other makers copied.
The refills are Hi-Tec-C fine gel ink. Each one comes with its own slide lever attached, in the color of the ink, so the lever you push always matches the color that comes out, wherever you put the refill.
How do you build a Coleto?
Pick a body with 2, 3, 4 or 5 slots, open the lid at the top, and drop each refill in from above. Pilot’s current lid, nicknamed “Pon-de-Open,” flips up with one thumb.
Body first, then any mix of refills and units.
Pilot’s own article warns against a common mistake: the body has a joint in the middle, but you shouldn’t unscrew it and pull refills out the front, because that can break them.

Why build your own multi pen?
Because ready-made multi pens fix the colors for you, and the Coleto doesn’t. Pilot’s article points out that most new multi pens are black, red and blue, so anyone who wants green, a pastel or two sizes of black has to look elsewhere.
With a Coleto you can carry, say, blue, red and green for reading notes, or black 0.3 mm plus a pencil and an eraser in one body. When a refill runs out you replace only that one, and the new refill brings its own lever.
The trade-off is length: the lever sits behind each refill and the lid above that, so the body is longer than a typical 4-color pen.
Which refills should you pick?
0.3 mm for the tiniest planner writing, 0.4 mm for pastel and metallic colors, and 0.5 mm for signatures and notes others will read. Pilot’s article suggests mixing sizes of the same color: black 0.5 mm for forms and black 0.3 mm for a planner.
The pastel and metallic refills use the Synergy Tip from the Pilot Juice Up. Fluorescent refills ended in December 2024, per Pilot.
How does the Coleto compare with other multi pens?
It offers the widest refill menu; the uni Style Fit is its direct rival and the Jetstream 4&1 is the ballpoint option.
For a single-color fine gel pen with the same ink, see the stick Pilot Hi-Tec-C.
Where is the Hi-Tec-C Coleto made?
Pilot doesn’t state it in its Japanese catalog. We list the country as not stated until we can check a package.
Frequently asked questions
How do you put refills in a Pilot Coleto?
Flip open the lid at the top of the body and drop the refill in, lever side up. Pilot warns not to unscrew the body in the middle and pull refills out from the front, which can break them.
What refills fit the Hi-Tec-C Coleto?
Pilot's LHKRF Coleto refills: gel ink in 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm, 0.4 mm pastel and metallic colors, 0.3 and 0.5 mm mechanical pencil units and an eraser unit. Regular Hi-Tec-C refills don't fit.
Can you put two of the same color in a Coleto?
Yes. Because each refill carries its own lever, you can load black 0.3 mm and black 0.5 mm side by side, for example.
What is the difference between the Coleto, Coleto 500 and Coleto 1000?
They are 4-color bodies at different prices: Pilot lists the Coleto 500 at 148.2 mm and 8.6 g and the Coleto 1000 at 148.2 mm and 12.1 g, against 149.9 mm and 9.2 g for the standard 4-color body.
Are Coleto fluorescent refills still sold?
No. Pilot's article says the fluorescent colors ended in December 2024; pastel and metallic 0.4 mm colors continue.
Is the Coleto good for a Hobonichi planner?
Hobonichi's writing-utensils catalog lists the Hi-Tec-C Coleto 0.3 mm among pens it tested on Tomoe River paper, and the fine sizes suit small daily pages.
Why is the Coleto longer than other multi pens?
Each refill has a lever on its end and the lid sits above that, so the body runs about 149 mm. Pilot's own article admits it is a little long.
What colors does the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto body come in?
Pilot Japan lists the 4-color body in 7 colors: Dot Blue, Dot Baby Pink, Dot Pink, Pink Pearl, Cream Pearl, Navy and clear. The refills, sold separately, come in 33 gel colors.
