LAMY AL-star aluminium fountain pen, EF to B steel nib: Made by C. Josef Lamy GmbH, Heidelberg (part of Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd.). Made in Germany: LAMY's own AL-star listings (India storefront) give Germany as the country of origin and name C. How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ specs and claims, US prices at Goulet Pens or the maker’s store on October 23, 2026, US availability and price band. Because 2026 price rises pushed several gold-nib pens past US$200, we checked every price on one day, then chose by nib, filling system and size.
How do the fountain pens under $200 compare?
One gold nib, three bottle fillers, four cartridge pens. Figures come from each pen’s guide, with US prices from Goulet Pens or the maker’s store on October 23, 2026.

Which pens crossed US$200 in 2026?
The Japanese gold-nib pens that used to anchor this bracket. At Goulet Pens on October 23, 2026 the Pilot Custom 74 listed at US$216, the Pilot Falcon at US$224 (MSRP US$280), the Custom Heritage 92 at US$264 (MSRP US$330), the Platinum #3776 Century at US$398.40 and the Sailor Pro Gear Slim at US$340. The LAMY 2000 sat at US$223.20 against an MSRP of US$279.
Those pens remain excellent, and our guides on the Custom 74, #3776 Century and LAMY 2000 cover them. If you see one under US$200 on sale, it’s the better buy than anything on this list except the Vanishing Point.
Gold nib or steel nib?
Under US$200 in 2026, a gold nib means the Vanishing Point or a sale. Gold nibs flex a little more and resist corrosion, but a well-made steel nib writes as smoothly. The Pelikan M200’s gold-plated steel nib, LAMY’s steel nibs and TWSBI’s German-made steel nibs are all reliable. Our nib sizes guide explains widths.
What the money buys instead is the filling system and the body. Pistons and vacuum fillers hold two to five times a cartridge, and the studio, AL Sport and Vanishing Point give you metal bodies with real heft.
Which fountain pen under $200 should you choose?
Match the pen to the job.
One pen that does everything: Vanishing Point, for quick notes without a cap and a gold nib for letters.
A classic to keep for decades: Pelikan M200.

Long writing sessions: VAC700R or Diamond 580.
Pocket and travel: Kaweco AL Sport.
Step up from a safari: AL-star.
Where are these fountain pens made?
Japan, Germany and Taiwan. Pilot’s Japanese catalog and US retailers list the Vanishing Point as made in Japan; Pelikan, LAMY and Kaweco state Germany on their own pages; Goldspot’s spec sheets give Taiwan for the TWSBI VAC700R and Diamond 580, with JetPens noting German-made nibs on the 580.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fountain pen under $200 with a gold nib?
The Pilot Vanishing Point, US$192 at Goulet Pens on October 23, 2026, with an 18k gold nib. The other gold-nib Japanese pens that used to sit under US$200, the Pilot Custom 74, Falcon and Custom Heritage 92 and the Platinum #3776 Century, were listed at US$216 to US$398 the same day.
Why did fountain pen prices go up in 2026?
US retail prices for Japanese and German pens rose during 2026; Goulet shows the Vanishing Point at an MSRP of US$240 and the LAMY 2000 at US$279, both above their 2025 levels. We don't speculate on causes here, but the practical effect is that US$200 now buys a steel-nib pen or one gold-nib pen on sale.
Is the Pelikan M200 worth it?
If you want a small, light piston filler that lasts decades, yes. Pelikan lists it at 12.5 cm and 13.5 g, its piston holds about 1.2 ml, and the nib unit unscrews so you can fit a 14k M400 nib later. Goulet listed M200 special editions from US$192 in October 2026.
Which fountain pen under $200 holds the most ink?
The TWSBI VAC700R, which Goulet measures at up to 2.37 ml by vacuum fill, then the TWSBI Diamond 580 at 1.98 ml by piston. Both cost under US$75, so they leave room for a bottle of ink.
What is a good fountain pen between $100 and $200?
The Pilot Vanishing Point at US$192 or a Pelikan M200 at about the same. Below US$100, the LAMY studio, Kaweco AL Sport, TWSBI VAC700R and Diamond 580 are the strongest picks, and our under $100 guide covers more.
Is the LAMY 2000 under $200?
Not in October 2026: Goulet listed it at US$223.20 against an MSRP of US$279, and LAMY Germany at €280 (about US$314). It remains the pen to save for if you want a piston filler with a hooded 14k nib.
Which fountain pen under $200 is best for a gift?
The Pilot Vanishing Point if the budget stretches, because a retractable gold nib is a surprise in itself. The LAMY studio at US$79.20 is the safer design gift, with its propeller clip and matt black lacquer. See our gifts for fountain pen lovers guide for sets and inks.
Do pens under $200 come with a converter?
The Vanishing Point ships with a CON-40 converter and a cartridge, and the gold-nib LAMY studio includes a Z27. The steel-nib studio, AL-star and AL Sport take a converter sold separately. The Pelikan M200, VAC700R and Diamond 580 fill from a bottle and need none.
