Notes on these facts
  • Made by Société BIC (France); sold in the US by BIC Corporation. Made in United States: PF Star's listing for the BL11 green dozen box gives Country of Origin: United States (read October 23, 2026); the Amazon listing for the 5-pack doesn't state a country. BIC's promotional-products site says the Brite Liner Grip it sells in Europe is made in France in BIC's own factories, so packs sold outside the US can differ. Check the pack. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Colors: names per BIC North America, checked October 24, 2026. The six ink colors BIC North America lists for the Brite Liner Chisel Tip (the Grip comes in the same colors minus purple). The assorted 5-pack holds one each of all but purple. Tints were sampled from the cap colors in Walmart's photo of the 5-pack; purple was sampled from the purple barrel in Office Depot's photo of the assorted 12-count box (BL11-AST). Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

What is the BIC Brite Liner?

It’s BIC’s everyday chisel-tip highlighter: a slim, pen-shaped marker with fluorescent water-based ink. BIC’s North American site says the ink stands out on the page, won’t bleed through and won’t dry out with the cap off for up to 8 hours.

It is also one of the most bought highlighters in the US. On October 23, 2026 the assorted 5-pack was #7 in Amazon’s Markers & Highlighters best sellers and #1 in Liquid Highlighters, with 44,732 ratings averaging 4.8 stars; the 12-pack of yellow sat at #24.

Which Brite Liner should you buy?

The plain Chisel Tip for most people, the Grip for long study sessions and the Pastel for journaling. BIC North America lists three versions:

Version Body Colors
Brite Liner Chisel Tip Thin pen style or wide tank 6: yellow, orange, green, pink, blue, purple
Brite Liner Grip Pen style with a comfort grip 5: yellow, orange, green, pink, blue
Brite Liner Pastel Pen style with a grip 6 pastel: yellow, pink, green, purple, orange, blue

BIC recommends the thin body for portability and small text and the tank for high-volume highlighting by students, teachers and legal offices. All three share the chisel tip, the no-bleed claim and the 8-hour cap-off claim.

Which Brite Liner pack should you buy?

The assorted 5-pack for color-coding, the yellow 12-pack if you only highlight in yellow. Both sat in Amazon US’s Markers & Highlighters top 30 on October 23, 2026:

Pack Item Rank, Oct 23, 2026 Ratings
5 assorted (yellow, pink, blue, green, orange) BLP51W-AST #7 44,732 (4.8)
12 fluorescent yellow Amazon ASIN B0017D2L42 #24 31,267 (4.7)

The 5-pack listing also offers larger multiples of the same pack. Per pen, the 5-pack works out well under a dollar, which puts it in our $ band.

Office suppliers also stock single-color dozen boxes in the BL11 range; PF Star lists the green BL11 with water-based ink and an ACMI nontoxic seal.

What is the Brite Liner best for?

Textbooks, printed handouts and notes, where a quick, bright mark matters more than a soft color. BIC writes the 5-pack’s copy for students and teachers: broad highlighting across textbook passages and fine underlining of key terms with the same chisel.

Two Amazon reviewers on the 5-pack page reported a pen that arrived dry, a reminder that cheap multi-packs vary. If you want muted colors for a journal, the Pastel version or a dual-tip pen suits better.

Does the BIC Brite Liner bleed through paper?

BIC says no. Its North American page says you can use them on important documents, books and study materials without bleed-through.

For very thin paper, our highlighters that don’t bleed roundup compares gentler options, including pastel and gel highlighters.

How does the Brite Liner compare with the Sharpie Tank?

Both are cheap US chisel highlighters; the Sharpie claims smear resistance, the BIC claims long cap-off life. Sharpie figures come from our guide.

BIC Brite Liner Sharpie Tank Style
Body Slim pen style (tank also sold) Wide tank
Maker’s claim No bleed-through, 8 h cap off Smear Guard ink
Amazon ratings, Oct 2026 44,732 (5-pack) 4,875 (12-pack)
Made in United States (distributor) United States (distributor)
Price band $ $

For a softer, two-tipped option, the Zebra Mildliner is the usual pick.

Where is the BIC Brite Liner made?

In the United States, for the US dozen boxes, according to distributor PF Star. Its listing for the BL11 green gives Country of Origin: United States; the Amazon 5-pack listing doesn’t say. BIC is a French company, and our BIC history explains how its US business began. BIC’s promotional site lists the European Brite Liner Grip as made in France, so check the pack.

Frequently asked questions

Do BIC Brite Liner highlighters bleed through paper?

BIC says they won't bleed through pages, including books and study materials. Very thin paper such as Bible pages is a harder test; we'll check it in our own test.

What colors are in the Brite Liner 5-pack?

One each of yellow, pink, blue, green and orange, per the Amazon listing for BLP51W-AST. BIC's Chisel Tip line also comes in purple, for 6 colors.

How long can a Brite Liner stay uncapped?

BIC says up to 8 hours without drying out. That's a maker claim, and an uncapped highlighter will still dry eventually, so cap it overnight.

What is the difference between Brite Liner and Brite Liner Grip?

The Grip adds a comfortable rubber grip for long study sessions and comes in 5 colors; the plain Chisel Tip comes in 6 colors and in thin or tank bodies.

Are Brite Liner highlighters non-toxic?

The Amazon listing calls the 5-pack ACMI approved, and PF Star lists the BL11 as ACMI Certified AP Nontoxic, the arts-and-crafts safety seal.

Does the Brite Liner smear gel pen ink?

BIC doesn't make a smear claim for the Brite Liner, unlike Sharpie's Smear Guard. Let pen ink dry before highlighting; we'll test common gel inks.

Are BIC Brite Liners made in the USA?

Yes, for the US BL11 boxes, according to PF Star's listing. European Brite Liner Grips are listed by BIC as made in France.
