What is the Galen Magnum Opus 6 Slots Hard Pen Case?
It’s a stiff leather box with a magnetic flap and a removable tray of six velvet-lined slots, made for fountain pens that are too long or too fat for elastic loops. Galen Leather, a family company in Istanbul, added the 6 Slots model to its US store in May 2021.
On October 22, 2026 it was the 25th product in Galen’s own “best selling” sort, ahead of the 12 slot version. Galen also sells it in Turkey as the “Magnum Opus 6’lı Kapaklı Deri Kalemlik” (6-pen leather pen case with flap).

Galen’s US and Turkish listings give the same size and weight. Galen doesn’t say which side is which; since the slots take 16 cm pens, the 16.5 cm side must run along the pens.
Which pens fit the Magnum Opus 6 Slots?
Most full-size fountain pens up to about 16 cm long and 1.55 cm thick, by Galen’s figures. Galen lists pens it tested in the case, among them the Montblanc 149 and 146, Pelikan M800 and M150, LAMY safari, TWSBI 580 AL, TWSBI VAC 700, Parker Sonnet and Platinum #3776.
Our own guides give the capped lengths: the Montblanc Meisterstück 149 at 146.1 mm, the TWSBI VAC700R at 147 mm and the Platinum #3776 Century at 139.5 mm. All three are too long for the 145 mm loops of Galen’s soft zippered cases.
Width is the tighter limit. Montblanc gives 17.3 mm for its 2024 Origin 149, presumably at the widest point of the cap, which is more than Galen’s 1.55 cm barrel figure, yet Galen still lists the 149 as tested; check pens with big clips or wide caps.

Both were listed at US$109 on Galen’s US store on October 22, 2026. Galen’s Turkish store prices each 6’lı model at ₺5,360 (about US$108).
How does it compare with Galen’s zippered loop cases?
The Magnum Opus protects fewer pens better. Each pen sits in its own rigid, lined slot, where Galen’s Zippered 10 Slots and Zippered 40 Slots hold pens in elastic loops limited to 145 mm.
Mountain of Ink, which reviewed a grey Magnum Opus 6 Slots that Galen sent in August 2022, found it sturdy and roomy enough for its largest pens. It liked that the inner tray comes out for easier access.
What are the downsides?
It’s bulky for six pens, and it costs more than many soft cases. At 3.5 cm (1.4 in) thick and 240 g empty, it’s no pocket case, and at Galen’s US price it sits in our over-$75 band.
The magnetic version has no zip, so it relies on the magnet to stay shut in a bag. Galen’s lead-time page says handmade orders typically ship in one to two weeks.
Where is the Galen Magnum Opus made?
