What is the Otto Hutt design 04?

It is Otto Hutt’s compact, mid-priced fountain pen with the widest choice of finishes. The maker calls it a homage to aesthetic straightforwardness: subtle shaping, compact dimensions and handling it says is hard to match. It sits between the slim design 01 and the larger design 06. For other premium pens, see our best luxury pens roundup.

What are its size, weight and materials?

Otto Hutt lists 132 mm capped, 123 mm open, 11.8 mm across and about 38.7 g. The body is brass, or sterling silver in one version. Otto Hutt describes lacquer applied in several layers, then sanded and hand polished, with caps and metal parts in platinum, ruthenium, rose gold, gold or black PVD. The spring clip is machined from solid brass.

Otto Hutt designs 01, 04 and 06 drawn capped to scale: 135, 132 and 140 mm long, 10.1, 11.8 and 14 mm across

What nibs does it offer?

A steel nib, or an 18-carat gold nib for about €165 (about US$185) more. Each comes in extra fine, fine, medium and broad with the Otto Hutt logo, and the gold nib is also offered bicolor or PVD coated. A converter is included. Line widths are explained in fountain pen nib sizes explained.

What colors, finishes and prices does it come in?

Eight combinations in our sample, from €220 (about US$246) to €350 (about US$392) with a steel nib. On October 31, 2026 Otto Hutt’s shop data listed gloss olive, black, blue and matt sand or ruthenium pens, check, thread and wave guilloche versions, and a sterling silver pen. Gloss and blue ruthenium brass pens were €220 (about US$246), check or thread guilloche and the sand pen €250 (about US$280), wave guilloche or the ruthenium pen €295 (about US$330) and silver €350 (about US$392). That puts it in our $$$$ band (over $75). Conversions use US$1.12 to the euro; Otto Hutt notes shipping, tax and customs duties are extra.

What comes in the box?

A converter, a cleaning cloth, instructions and a certificate. Otto Hutt’s page lists a matching converter for your own ink, a silver or microfiber cleaning cloth, the instructions and a certificate. Choose the nib in the configurator before ordering: the page we read defaulted to a medium steel nib. For how a converter works, see fountain pen converters explained.

How is the nib checked?

Otto Hutt says every pen gets a writing test. Its craftsmanship page says nibs are tested for function, line width and how well they guide, and that each pen is inspected by hand before it can carry the Made in Germany label. We haven’t tested a sample ourselves yet, so treat this as the maker’s claim.

How does it compare with designs 01 and 06?

It is the middle pen in size and the widest in finishes. At 11.8 mm across and about 38.7 g it sits between design 01 (10.1 mm, about 25.3 g) and design 06 (14 mm, about 44.9 g). Only design 04 offers a sterling silver body and the guilloche patterns in our sample; design 01 lists a thread-pattern version and design 06 gloss and matt lacquer only.

How does guilloche work?

It is a machine-engraved pattern from the jewelry trade. Otto Hutt’s craftsmanship page says the technique dates to the 17th century, that the company still uses it with CNC control, and that UNESCO recognized guilloche in 2015.

Is every pen unique?

Otto Hutt says each pen carries a six-digit code engraved in the cap. You can add your own engraving on the clip or beside it.

Where is design 04 made?

In Germany, per Otto Hutt. The English home page says production happens only at its Black Forest site, and Faber-Castell acquired the brand in 2023; see Faber-Castell’s history.
