What is the Pentel EnerGel Philography?

It is Pentel’s metal-barrel EnerGel gel pen with a twist mechanism, made to look and feel like a gift pen. Pentel’s Japanese page describes the twist as a way to “prepare” smooth writing, and the ink as dark, clear and quick-drying so it doesn’t smear hands or paper.

Inside is the same EnerGel refill as Pentel’s everyday pens. That makes the Philography a nicer body for an ink many people already use.

What are the specs?

A 143 mm metal twist pen with a 0.5 mm needle tip. Pentel doesn’t publish size or weight, so those come from retailers.

What refills does the Philography take?

Any EnerGel refill, from 0.3 to 1.0 mm, according to Pentel Japan. The pen ships with 0.5 mm, and the Japanese refills cost ¥99 (about US$0.60) each.

Five EnerGel refills that fit the Philography: 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm needle tips (XLRN3, XLRN4, XLRN5) and 0.7 and 1.0 mm cone tips (XLR7, XLR10)

The needle tips come in black, red, blue, blue-black and brown in Japan; the 0.7 and 1.0 mm cone tips in black, red and blue. Yoseka says it takes all EnerGel refills, and our Pentel EnerGel RTX guide lists the LRN and LR codes they carry in the US.

What colors does it come in?

Eight barrels in Japan, all with black ink. Pentel lists Black, Red, Dark Blue, Brown, Turquoise Blue, White, Warm Silver and Silver.

Shops outside Japan stock fewer. Yoseka listed five standard colors, and The Journal Shop sold a separate pastel series. Yoseka also made its own Yoseka Green edition with Pentel, sold with a matching sleeve.

Where is the Philography made?

Sources split between Taiwan and Japan, likely by market. The Journal Shop gives Taiwan as the country of origin, and Yoseka writes that the pen it sells is made in Taiwan; both list Taiwanese barcodes.

Paper Whisper sells pens with Pentel Japan barcodes and lists Japan. Pentel’s own page doesn’t say, so check the box.

How does it compare with other metal gel pens?

The main differences are the twist and the refill system.

If you prefer a plastic body and a rubber grip with the same ink, the EnerGel RTX is the everyday version.

Is it worth it over a plastic EnerGel?

If you want weight and a quiet twist, yes; for the ink alone, no. The writing is the same EnerGel refill. A Japanese stationery editor quoted on Pentel’s page singles out the slightly heavy, high-end feel of the twist.

At ¥2,420 (about US$15) in Japan, you pay for the body; refills for it cost the same ¥99 (about US$0.60) as for any EnerGel.

What does it cost in the US?

About US$25. Yoseka listed the standard Philography at US$25 on October 29, 2026, in our $$$ band, and its Yoseka Green edition at US$28.

The Journal Shop listed its pastel version at £18.95 (about US$25) the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EnerGel Philography a ballpoint or a gel pen?

A gel pen. It uses Pentel's EnerGel gel ink refill; some shops, including The Journal Shop, list it as a ballpoint because Pentel files gel pens under ballpoint pens in Japan.

Can the Philography take a 0.7 mm refill?

Yes. Pentel Japan says all five EnerGel ball sizes fit, including the 0.7 mm XLR7 and 1.0 mm XLR10. Yoseka sells it with 0.7 mm needle-tip XLRN7 refills too.

How heavy is the Pentel Philography?

Paper Whisper lists 26 g, about twice a typical plastic retractable gel pen. Pentel's Japanese page doesn't give a weight.

Does the Philography click?

No. Pentel says it uses a twist mechanism to extend the tip, and a Japanese stationery editor quoted on Pentel's page liked its slightly weighty twist.

What is the Yoseka Green Philography?

An edition Yoseka Stationery made with Pentel in its signature green, with a matte body and a matching sleeve. Yoseka listed it at US$28 on October 29, 2026.

Is the Pentel Philography made in Japan?

It depends on the stock. The Journal Shop and Yoseka say Taiwan for the pens they sell; Paper Whisper says Japan for Japanese-market pens.
