What is the Pentel EnerGel Clena?

It is an EnerGel gel pen dressed in cream and stripes. Pentel Japan’s concept line is a soft, grown-up classic look: a unified cream body with a stripe pattern. Pentel pitches the writing as smooth, with clear, sharp lines and fast drying so hands and papers stay clean.

Yoseka’s listing says anyone who knows the EnerGel Infree will recognize the Clena. The bodies share a shape and size; the Clena just trades the clear barrel for a white one with colored stripes.

What tip sizes and model numbers are there?

Three needle-tip sizes: 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm, each in all four body colors. Pentel Japan lists every pen at ¥275 (about US$1.70) with tax, or ¥250 (about US$1.60) without.

Tip Pentel rating Model family Body colors
0.3 mm Extra fine BLN73 Mimosa yellow, mint green, classical pink, sax blue
0.4 mm Fine BLN74 Same four
0.5 mm Fine BLN75 Same four

Each model code ends in a color letter and “-A” for black ink: LG is mimosa yellow, LK mint green, LP classical pink and LS sax blue. Our 0.5 mm black-ink pen above is the mint-green BLN75LK-A.

What colors does it come in?

Four body colors: mimosa yellow, mint green, classical pink and sax blue, all with black ink. Pentel’s listing gives black as the only ink color. Pentel Japan also lists packaged versions in classical pink and sax blue for all three tips.

What refills does it take?

The standard EnerGel needle-tip refills: XLRN3, XLRN4 and XLRN5. Pentel Japan lists each at ¥99 (about US$0.60) in black, red, blue-black and brown, matching the 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm tips. Pentel’s page lists these refills against the Clena; we haven’t checked a fit by hand.

For the family’s other pens, see our EnerGel overview and the Infree guide, and for a rival, Sarasa Clip versus EnerGel.

How does it differ from the Infree and the regular EnerGel?

The Clena is a black-ink, three-tip, cream-bodied pen; the Infree is a ten-color, clear-barrel pen. Our Infree guide lists 0.4, 0.5 and 0.7 mm tips; the Clena swaps the 0.7 mm for a 0.3 mm. Both share a body shape, per Yoseka, and both sit in Pentel’s EnerGel line of quick-drying gel ink.

The table is built from Pentel Japan’s two product pages, as quoted in this guide and our Infree guide.

Who is it for?

People who want one dependable black in a fine tip and like the look. Pentel’s own pitch is to choose a pen to suit the color of your paper and your mood, and the stripe colors give you a way to tell pens apart in a pen cup. The 0.3 mm is the one to try for small handwriting and planner entries; the 0.5 mm is the all-round size.

What can’t we tell you yet?

Weight, ink color accuracy and the knock mechanism. Neither Pentel Japan’s page nor Yoseka’s gives a weight or describes the knock, we haven’t checked whether the pen is refillable beyond Pentel’s listing of refills, and we haven’t tested how fast the ink dries. Pentel says it dries quickly, which is a claim, not our result.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

We couldn’t find a country of origin on Pentel Japan’s page or Yoseka’s. Pentel’s operating company has been ASTRUM Corporation since April 1, 2026, with Pentel kept as the brand, per our Infree guide.

Yoseka Stationery listed the 0.5 mm black-ink Clena at US$3.50 on October 31, 2026, in our $ band (under $5). Pentel Japan’s ¥275 (about US$1.70) is the list price in Japan.

We didn’t check Pentel of America’s site, and we haven’t weighed a pen, so we leave out its weight.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Clena come in colored inks?

Not on Pentel Japan's Clena page: the ink is black. Yoseka mentions a separate color-ink version, which we haven't checked.

Which Clena tip is finest?

The 0.3 mm (BLN73), which Pentel rates as extra fine. The 0.4 mm (BLN74) and 0.5 mm (BLN75) are rated fine, and all three use needle tips.

Is the Clena the same as the Infree?

Yoseka says the two have bodies of identical shape and size. The Clena has a cream body with colored stripes; the Infree has a clear barrel, so their looks differ.

What are the Clena refill codes?

XLRN3 for 0.3 mm, XLRN4 for 0.4 mm and XLRN5 for 0.5 mm, each with a color suffix: A black, B red, CA blue-black and E brown, at ¥99 (about US$0.60).

Does it come in packs?

Pentel Japan lists packaged versions in classical pink and sax blue for all three tips, with codes starting XBLN7, at the same ¥275 (about US$1.70).

How long is it?

Yoseka says 5.8 in (14.8 cm). We found no weight on either page.

Is it retractable?

Yoseka's listing says so. Pentel Japan's page doesn't describe the mechanism.
