  • Made by Tetzbo (Yoshikazu Takai). Made in Japan: Kakimori's English product page lists the manufacturer as Tetzbo (Yoshikazu Takai) and the country of manufacture as Japan. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Colors: names per Kakimori, checked October 31, 2026. Three finishes per Kakimori's journal and product pages. Tints were sampled from Kakimori's product photos and are representative; Kakimori says each pen is unique. Antique brown was sold out on October 31, 2026. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

  • Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).

Key takeaways

  • Kakimori lists the slim Chibien at 110 mm long, 8 mm across and 26 g, and the thick at 99 mm, 9 mm and 33 g, both in brass, made in Japan.
  • Kakimori's price is ¥12,000 (about US$76) for either size, which puts it in our $$$$ band (over $75); the newer Z model is ¥13,200 (about US$84).
  • It takes a 0.7 mm black refill: SXR-89-07 in the slim and SXR-80-07 in the thick, and Kakimori says all TETZBO pens use Mitsubishi Jetstream refills.
  • Kakimori says the antique black and brown finishes come from oxidizing the brass and fade over time, while raw brass tarnishes with handling.
  • It is non-retractable and capless; the refill is changed with the Allen key in the box, and Kakimori says every pen varies slightly because each is made by hand.

What is the TETZBO Chibien?

It is a brass ballpoint made to look like a freshly sharpened pencil. Kakimori says “Chibien” means “mini pencil” and calls it the signature design of Tetzbo’s creator, ironsmith Yoshikazu Takai, who it says does every step of production by hand.

Its journal explains that the end of a hexagonal brass rod is cut and finished into the pencil point, which takes exceptional skill and precision. TETZBO takes its name from a Japanese word meaning “iron rod”, and Kakimori’s shop sells the whole line.

What are the specs?

Two sizes in brass: slim 110 × 8 mm at 26 g, thick 99 × 9 mm at 33 g. Kakimori’s English page lists both.

Kakimori warns that because each pen is made by hand, specification and feel vary slightly between pieces.

What finishes does it come in?

Three: brass, antique black and antique brown. Kakimori’s journal says the antique finishes come from oxidizing the brass, giving it an aged look. Raw brass tarnishes from handling, while the antique finish gradually fades to show the original brass, so each pen changes with use.

Kakimori adds that patinas can develop faster in warmer climates, particularly in Asia. Antique brown was sold out when we looked on October 31, 2026.

How do you change the refill?

With the Allen key in the box. Kakimori’s journal calls the key a detail typical of Takai’s work, one that fosters a sense of connection and play. The pen is non-retractable and capless, so the point is always out, and Kakimori suggests TETZBO’s pen rest for the desk.

Refills are 0.7 mm black: SXR-89-07 for the slim and SXR-80-07 for the thick. The journal says all TETZBO pens use Mitsubishi Jetstream refills, so we don’t claim fit with other brands’ refills.

What about the Z, Iroen and other TETZBO pens?

The Chibien is the center of a bigger line. Kakimori lists these on its TETZBO page:

  • Chibien Z: the same pencil shape with a threaded end cap for reaching the refill, H97 × Ø9 mm, 26 g, ¥13,200 (about US$84), one-of-a-kind colouring and finish.
  • Iroen: the Chibien design with colored silver foil pressed onto the surface and peeled back, so each is irregular. It uses a Phillips-head screwdriver for the refill and lists at ¥16,000 (about US$101).
  • Tz series: capped ballpoints; Kakimori describes the Tzn-1 as resembling a steel rod, in brass and nickel silver.

We cover only the Chibien in depth here.

Is it worth the price?

It’s a collectible object more than a budget pen. At ¥12,000 (about US$76) it sits in our $$$$ band, many times the cost of the Toggle Pen Kakimori also sells. Its draw is the hand-made brass body and the patina, not a new ink: the refill is a standard Jetstream.

For cheaper options, see our best ballpoint pens and best pocket pens guides. Kakimori’s stainless steel nib and sakura wood holder are its nearby hand-crafted pieces.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

In Japan, by Tetzbo. Kakimori lists Japan as the country of manufacture.

Kakimori listed ¥12,000 (about US$76) on October 31, 2026. We haven’t found a US retailer price we can cite, so we give none. Overseas orders from Kakimori ship with the tip sealed in liquid rubber that you remove before writing.

What tool opens the Chibien to swap the ink?

With the Allen key that comes in the box. Kakimori says this is typical of the maker's work; the newer Z model has a threaded end cap instead.
