Notes on these facts
  • Made by Platinum Pen Co., Ltd.. Country of manufacture not stated: Platinum Japan's product pages for both converters give the materials but not a country. Price: example listing.
  • How we test and disclose samples: How we test stationery.
  • Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).

Key takeaways

  • Platinum Japan lists the Converter 800A at ¥990 (about US$6.30) and the 700A at ¥880 (about US$5.60) with tax; the only listed difference is the rear barrel's plating.
  • Both hold 0.53 ml and measure 65 mm long and 7.5 mm across, at a standard weight of 3.8 g.
  • Platinum says neither fits the PS-10000N or the PAF-5000; it names no other pen it excludes.
  • A Platinum cartridge holds about 1.2 ml, so the converter carries less than half as much ink.
  • Yoseka sold it in Gold and Silver at a price in our $$ band ($5–20) on October 30, 2026, and says it fits the Preppy, Procyon and #3776.

What is the Platinum fountain pen converter?

It is a refillable ink chamber that replaces a cartridge, so a Platinum pen can drink from a bottle. Platinum’s Japanese site calls it a fountain pen ink suction tool. You dip the nozzle in ink, draw it up and push the converter where the cartridge would go.

Platinum sells two versions, the Converter 800A and the Converter 700A. For how converters compare across brands, see our converter explainer.

What are the specs?

Both versions are 65 mm long and 7.5 mm across and hold 0.53 ml. The table is Platinum Japan’s data, which is identical for both except the plating and price.

Which Platinum pens does it fit?

Platinum doesn’t publish a fitting list; it names only two pens that can’t use it. Both product pages say the converter can’t be used with the PS-10000N or the PAF-5000.

Yoseka’s listing says the converter is compatible with the Preppy, the Procyon and the #3776. Our Preppy guide says a Platinum converter fits it, and our #3776 Century guide notes that the 3776’s box holds a Converter-800A per Platinum Japan.

How much ink does it hold?

Only 0.53 ml, which is a bit more than a Pilot converter and well under Platinum’s own cartridge. Our converter guide puts a Platinum cartridge at about 1.2 ml, so one fill lasts less than half as long.

The tradeoff is choice: a converter takes any bottled ink. Pilot’s CON-40 holds 0.4 ml and the LAMY Z28 0.8 ml.

Gold or chrome: which should you buy?

Buy the one that matches your pen’s trim, because they work the same. Platinum’s pages list identical capacity, size and weight. The 800A has a gold-plated rear barrel and costs ¥110 (about US$0.70) more.

Yoseka sells Gold and Silver versions at one price, in our $$ band. We haven’t tested whether either finish wears.

Converter or cartridge: which is better?

A converter is cheaper per milliliter of ink and opens up every bottled color, while a cartridge is cleaner and holds more. Platinum sells both, and its Preppy and #3776 take either; our SPN-100A cartridge guide has the nine colors.

If you travel or write a lot between fills, keep a few cartridges as a backup. If you like trying inks, the converter pays for itself after a bottle or two, and our best fountain pen inks for beginners list is a place to start.

How do you clean and refill it?

Rinse it with water between inks. Platinum’s pages leave usage steps to a manual linked from each page, which we could not open, so we don’t repeat any steps that we couldn’t read.

Generally, a converter is cleaned by filling and emptying it with clean water until it runs clear, then letting it dry before the next ink.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

Platinum doesn’t state it. Its converter pages list materials and no country, so we mark the origin “Not stated”.

In Japan, the 800A lists at ¥990 (about US$6.30) and the 700A at ¥880 (about US$5.60) with tax. Yoseka listed the converter in our $$ band ($5–20) on October 30, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 800A and the 700A?

The plating on the rear barrel. Platinum lists the 800A with gold plating and the 700A with chrome; capacity, size and weight are identical, and the 800A costs ¥110 (about US$0.70) more.

Does the Platinum converter fit the Preppy?

Yoseka says so, listing the Preppy, Procyon and #3776 as compatible. Platinum's own converter pages don't list pens, only two exclusions, so check your pen's page before buying.

Which Platinum pens can't use it?

The PS-10000N and the PAF-5000, per Platinum's notes on both converter pages. It lists no other exclusions, but also no list of fitting pens.

What is the converter's capacity?

0.53 ml, which Platinum calls its suction capacity. That is about 0.7 ml less than the roughly 1.2 ml in a Platinum cartridge, so expect to refill more often.

Can you use another brand's converter in a Platinum pen?

Not directly. Platinum's pens take Platinum's own cartridges and converter; our Preppy guide notes that Platinum sells an adapter for standard international cartridges.

Is the Platinum converter refillable and reusable?

Yes, that is its purpose: you fill it from a bottle, empty it and fill it again. Rinse it with water before changing ink colors.

Is the Platinum converter made in Japan?

Probably, but we can't confirm it. Platinum is a Japanese company, yet its converter pages state materials and not a country of manufacture.
