Notes on these facts
  • Made in United States: CW&T's Pen Type-B page says Type-B and all its other pens are made at a multi-generation machine shop in Vermont, taking over 20 operations per pen. We read it on October 31, 2026. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Colors: names per CW&T Pen Type-B product page, checked October 31, 2026. Variant names are CW&T's, as listed on October 31, 2026 when all were sold out. CW&T says the brass sleeve is deliberately uncoated so it can develop a patina. We drew no tints because the variant list gives names, not color values. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

Key takeaways

  • CW&T lists the pen at 125 mm long and 9.8 mm across, with a 120 × 12 mm sleeve.
  • Brass sleeve 47 g plus stainless steel pen 44 g is 91 g; the titanium sleeve (25 g) and pen (27 g) together weigh 52 g.
  • The tolerance between pen and sleeve is tight enough that the pen drops slowly into the sleeve and pops out with a sound, as CW&T describes a piston-like effect.
  • It ships with a black Pilot Hi-Tec-C 0.3 mm cartridge; you change it by unscrewing the back with a coin.
  • CW&T's page listed every Type-B variant as sold out on October 31, 2026; prices run from US$192 for polished brass to US$299 for the turquoise bronze version.

What is the CW&T Pen Type-B?

The Pen Type-B is a minimal, round machined pen that lives in a flat sleeve. CW&T, a New York design studio, calls it an everyday pen over-engineered to last generations, and the ultimate pen for illustrators, designers and architects. It is the plainer sibling of the Pen Type-A: no visible logo, and no engraved scale.

CW&T says Type-B was funded on Kickstarter on November 8, 2015, and the titanium version on July 22, 2017.

Why does the Pen Type-B pop out of its sleeve?

CW&T machines the pen and sleeve to such close tolerances that they behave like a piston. The pen falls slowly into the sleeve, and pulling it out quickly makes a popping sound. CW&T says the sleeve is also machined flat so it won’t roll off a desk.

Brass or titanium?

Titanium weighs almost half as much; brass develops a patina. CW&T lists the brass and stainless steel version at 91 g and the titanium one at 52 g, and says titanium has the hardness of stainless steel and the lightness of aluminum. The brass sleeve is deliberately uncoated, so it changes with handling.

Titanium is also sold in a matte black Cerakote coating, a ceramic-polymer finish CW&T says is durable but will wear to reveal the titanium. It also offers an aluminum case and custom laser engraving on the sleeve.

Which refill does the Pen Type-B use?

A Pilot Hi-Tec-C cartridge, and CW&T ships it with a black 0.3 mm one. Unscrew the back with a coin to swap it. CW&T says the cartridges come in four line widths and more than 30 colors. Our Pilot Hi-Tec-C guide covers the needle-tip pen those refills come from, and the Coleto guide the build-your-own system that shares the family.

Which shop makes the Pen Type-B?

In Vermont, per CW&T. The page says a multi-generation machine shop makes it, with over 20 operations per pen, each held to tolerances above what a fit between pen and sleeve strictly needs.

How does the Type-B differ from the Type-A?

It uses the same pen and sleeve sizes but drops the engraved scale. CW&T lists both at a 125 mm pen, 9.8 mm across, in a 120 × 12 mm sleeve. The Pen Type-A is stainless steel with a ruler or architect’s scale and a magnet that holds the pen in place; the Type-B adds brass and titanium builds and has no visible logo or markings, which CW&T presents as its minimal option.

How does it compare with other metal pocket pens?

It is longer and heavier than most, and the sleeve is the point. At 125 mm the pen is about the length of a Fisher Space Pen Bullet posted, but you carry it in its sleeve rather than clipped. For the slimmest carry, the Type-C is 3.5 mm thin. See our best pocket pens for lower-priced options.

What does the Pen Type-B sell for?

It sits in our $$$$ band (over $75). On October 31, 2026 CW&T listed polished brass at US$192, matte titanium at US$210, polished titanium at US$215, Cerakote titanium at US$230 and the ombré and bronze versions at US$289 to US$299. Every variant showed as sold out that day, so check CW&T’s page for restocks.
