What is the Pentel EnerGel Infree?

It is a Japan-market EnerGel with a clear barrel, so you see the ink color through the pen instead of on a colored body. Pentel Japan presents it as an “idea expression tool”, a pen for scribbling and developing ideas rather than plain office notes.

Pentel names three things it wants from the ink: quick drying so you don’t smudge, a smooth writing feel, and clear, sharp writing that is easy to read back. Those are the traits of the regular Pentel EnerGel; the Infree adds its own colors and a see-through body.

What tip sizes and model numbers are there?

Three sizes: 0.4 and 0.5 mm with needle tips and 0.7 mm with a conical tip. Every size comes in all ten inks, and all share the clear barrel.

Tip Pen model Refill Japanese list price
0.4 mm needle (extra fine) BLN74TL XLRN4TL ¥275 (about US$1.70)
0.5 mm needle (extra fine) BLN75TL XLRN5TL ¥275 (about US$1.70)
0.7 mm conical (fine) BL77TL XLR7TL ¥275 (about US$1.70)
10-color set, any size BLN74TL-10, BLN75TL-10, BL77TL-10 ¥2,750 (about US$17)

Prices are Pentel Japan’s tax-included list prices on October 29, 2026; refills list at ¥99 (about US$0.60). Pentel also lists blister-packed versions with an X prefix (XBLN75TL and so on) at the same price.

What colors does the EnerGel Infree come in?

Ten: Black, Red, Burgundy, Blue, Blue Black, Orange, Rough Gray, Pink, Turquoise Blue and Violet. Pentel Japan’s page lists the same ten for every tip and in every 10-color set.

Rough Gray is the unusual one. Pentel’s user stories describe sketching rough ideas in it, then sharpening them with Violet and Turquoise Blue, and pairing Blue Black and Burgundy as quieter alternatives to blue and red.

Yoseka sells the 0.5 mm in the same ten colors, though its listing calls Rough Gray simply “Grey”.

How big and heavy is it?

Maruzen Junkudo lists the 0.5 mm black at 147 mm long and 13 g. Its package size is 16 × 11 × 147 mm, so the barrel is about 11 mm across and the clip adds the rest.

Yoseka gives 14.8 cm (5.8 in), a millimeter longer, which is within rounding of the same pen. Pentel’s page doesn’t give a length or weight.

Spec EnerGel Infree 0.5 mm (BLN75TL)
Length 147 mm (5.8 in), Maruzen Junkudo; Yoseka 14.8 cm
Width 11 mm (0.4 in) barrel, 16 mm with clip
Weight 13 g
Mechanism Retractable knock
Ink EnerGel gel ink, quick-drying (Pentel)
Materials Recycled polycarbonate rear barrel, ABS front, elastomer grip, iron clip

How does it compare with the regular EnerGel?

Same family and ink promise, different body and color set. The EnerGel RTX is the version Pentel sells in America; the Infree’s barrel is clear and its ten inks include Rough Gray, Burgundy and Turquoise Blue.

Their refills are different part numbers: the Infree’s XLRN5TL is listed only for the Infree on Pentel’s page. If you already use an EnerGel and want a similar quick-drying gel pen from another maker, our Zebra Sarasa Clip guide covers the closest rival.

Can you buy it in the US?

Yes, from importers, but not from Pentel’s US store. A search of Pentel of America’s store on October 29, 2026 returned other EnerGel pens and refills but no Infree, which is why it appears in our Japan-only pens roundup.

On October 29, 2026 Yoseka listed the 0.5 mm at US$3.50 in all ten colors, which sits in our $ band (under $5). Pentel itself is now ASTRUM Corporation, renamed in April 2026, as our Pentel history explains; the brand on the pen is unchanged.

Where is the EnerGel Infree made?

In Japan, according to Maruzen Junkudo’s listing for the 0.5 mm black. Pentel’s own page doesn’t state the country of manufacture, and we couldn’t read JetPens or Amazon, which block our tools.

Pentel’s limited soft-color Energel is covered in our Energel Kohare guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EnerGel Infree sold in the US?

Not by Pentel of America: a search of its store on October 29, 2026 found no Infree. Importers such as Yoseka Stationery sell it.

Does the Infree use the same ink as a normal EnerGel?

Pentel describes the same quick-drying, smooth EnerGel gel ink, but the Infree has its own color set and its own refills (XLRN4TL, XLRN5TL, XLR7TL), so we treat them as separate.

What is Rough Gray?

It is one of the ten Infree inks. Pentel's page pictures it as the color for sketching rough ideas before refining them with brighter colors.

Which Infree tip is finest?

The 0.4 mm needle tip (BLN74TL). The 0.5 mm also has a needle tip, and the 0.7 mm has a conical tip that Pentel rates as fine rather than extra fine.

Can the orange Infree be hidden with a red sheet?

Pentel's page says a user hides orange notes under a red sheet to memorize them. We haven't tested how well each color disappears.

How heavy is the EnerGel Infree?

Maruzen Junkudo lists the 0.5 mm black at 13 g, with a body of 16 × 11 × 147 mm including the clip.

Is the Infree barrel recyclable plastic?

Maruzen Junkudo lists the rear barrel as recycled polycarbonate. Pentel's own page doesn't describe the materials.
