What is the Zebra Mackee Knock?

It is a permanent marker you click open instead of uncapping. Zebra says the capless design lets you knock with one hand and write at once, which saves time on a busy job and removes the risk of losing a cap. It uses Mackee’s oil-based ink.

What are the specs?

13.0 × 140.3 mm, 13.0 g, fine 1.0 to 1.3 mm. Zebra lists:

Item Value
Line width 1.0 to 1.3 mm
Ink alcohol-based oil dye, black
Size 13.0 mm diameter × 140.3 mm
Weight 13.0 g
Part number YYSS6-5C
Price 198 yen with tax (about US$1.25)

Zebra lists a thick Knock at 264 yen with tax (about US$1.67); we read only the fine page.

What can it mark?

The ink is quick-drying and water-resistant and suits paper, cloth, wood, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal and vinyl, but not soft vinyl items such as inflatable rings. Zebra gives no dry time. A capless marker still relies on its mechanism to seal the tip, and Zebra publishes no figure for how long it stays wet.

Is it worth paying more for the click?

It costs 66 yen more than the cap-style Care fine. The fine Mackee Care is 132 yen and the Knock is 198, by Zebra’s tax-included prices, so the click costs about 50 percent more. You also give up the refill: Zebra’s page for the Knock lists no cartridge. For a refillable pen see the Mackee Care.

How does it compare with the rest of the line?

It is the one-handed marker. The thick-and-fine pen is the Hi-Mackee. The line:
