What is Tombow PiT Egg?

It is a tape runner shaped like an egg. Tombow describes a compact tape runner for beginners: a body with as few bumps as possible, so you can hold it firmly however you grip it and pull the tape cleanly. The narrow 6 mm tape is also meant for first-time users, and the small size slides into a pencil case.

It is Tombow’s small-format line. For the larger 8.4 mm runners, see the PiT Retry C, PiT Power C and PiT Tack C.

What are the three types?

Power, retry and tack, each with its own tape. Tombow lists these, with tax.

Type Part number Tape What it does Price
Power Egg PN-EP 6 mm × 6 m strong bonding 242 yen (about US$1.53)
Retry Egg PN-ER 6 mm × 7 m, dot tape stick now, re-stick for a short time 242 yen (about US$1.53)
Tack Egg PN-EK 6 mm × 6 m firm hold that peels off 242 yen (about US$1.53)

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. Tombow also lists a Soda color of the Power Egg (PN-EPC40); no other colors are on the page we read.

What does the head do?

It bends to keep contact. Tombow says the fit head flexes so that even if it does not land flat on the paper, it presses against the page and corrects hand shake, giving an even line. A full-cover head cap opens and closes and keeps dust out in a bag; its top is clear polycarbonate so it does not block your view of the head.

What should you know about the retry and tack types?

They behave like the larger runners. Tombow says the retry type’s re-stick time was measured at 23 °C under a 500 g load and varies with paper, that the hold weakens with repeated peeling, and that fuzzy papers such as washi are hard to re-stick. For the tack type, avoid curves and wavy lines, wipe off dirt and oil, apply at 15 to 35 °C and test important items, since a fast pull can tear paper into the roll.

Is it good value?

Per meter it costs more than a big runner. The refill is not listed on the page we read, so we compare the bodies: 242 yen for 6 m is about 40 yen a meter and 242 yen for 7 m is about 35 yen a meter, against 484 yen for 16 m, about 30 yen a meter, for Tombow’s PiT Power D. You pay extra for the small body.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

Tombow’s page doesn’t state a country of manufacture. The company is based in Tokyo. At 242 yen with tax (about US$1.53), each egg is in our $ band (under $5).
