How does Polar Glow look on paper?
Bright blue in normal writing, with pink to red-purple sheen where the ink pools. Mountain of Ink calls the base a bright medium blue and rates both shading and pink sheen high; Goulet says the sheen keeps it looking deep blue with red-purple tones.
The sheen depends on paper and nib. It shows best on smooth, coated paper such as Tomoe River and in a wet, broad nib. On Staples copy paper, Mountain of Ink saw feathering and bleeding with every nib size.
How fast does Polar Glow dry, and is it water resistant?
It dries in roughly 15 to 20 seconds, and it isn’t water resistant. Mountain of Ink timed 15 seconds; Goulet measured 20 seconds or more and warns that quick notes can smear.
In Goulet’s drip test the writing lightened to a pale turquoise but didn’t fully wash away. Mountain of Ink rated water resistance medium. For anything that must survive water, use a pigment ink such as Platinum Carbon Black.
Which pens is Polar Glow safe for?
Any fountain pen that takes bottled ink. Goulet lists it as not pigmented, not iron gall and not shimmering, and Diamine says its inks suit any brand of fountain pen, especially vintage ones.
Goulet rates it easy to clean, with possible slight staining on light-colored pens. A clear demonstrator such as the TWSBI ECO shows off the color; one bottle is about 28 ECO fills.
How does it compare with other sheening blues?
It’s brighter than Blue Velvet and bluer than Fire & Ice, with a pinker sheen than either. Details for the other inks come from our guides.

Frequently asked questions
What color is Diamine Polar Glow?
A bright medium blue with turquoise hints, according to Mountain of Ink and Goulet. Where the ink pools it shows a pink to red-purple sheen.
Is Diamine Polar Glow a shimmer ink?
No. The glow is sheen, not glitter: Goulet lists it as non-shimmering, so there are no particles to clog a pen.
Is Diamine Polar Glow waterproof?
No. Goulet rates its water resistance low: a drip test lightened it to a pale turquoise, though the writing didn't fully disappear.
Why can't I see the sheen in Polar Glow?
Goulet says the sheen shows best with broader nibs on high-quality paper. Try a wet, broad nib on smooth paper such as Tomoe River rather than a fine nib on copy paper.
Was Polar Glow in the Diamine Inkvent calendar?
Yes. Diamine says the 50 ml bottles hold ink from its 2019 Inkvent Calendar, the Blue Edition.
Does Polar Glow stain pens?
Lightly at most. Goulet rates it medium-high for ease of cleaning and says it may slightly stain a light-colored pen body, which pen flush or soapy water should remove.
Is Diamine Polar Glow made in England?
Yes. Diamine says it makes its inks at its own facility on the edge of Liverpool, England.
