Paper Mate doesn’t publish a size or weight in the sources we could reach, so the sizes above are retailers’ figures. The two disagree by about half an inch, which is why we drew the cover in proportion only.

How big is the Pink Pearl Large?

About 2 to 2.5 inches long, 1 inch wide and 3/8 inch thick, depending on which retailer you trust. School Specialty’s 62.7 mm length is close to the 65 mm of a Staedtler Mars plastic, while Staples’ 2 in figure would make it about 14 mm shorter.

The slanted ends give you a narrow edge for single words and a broad face for bigger areas. Measure your own if the fit matters, for example in a pencil case slot.

Why is the Pink Pearl pink?

Because of the pumice in Eberhard Faber’s original rubber. The Benton County Museums say the company used a particular Italian pumice that made its erasers pink, and began selling separate erasers to the school market in 1916; the Pink Pearl name came later.

Today’s erasers no longer use pumice or natural rubber, the museum notes, and are dyed pink because buyers expect an eraser to be pink. The museum adds that the pink school eraser is mostly an American habit: in Europe, hand erasers are usually white or grey.

Pink Pearl vs Mars plastic and Hi-Polymer: which should you buy?

Buy the Pink Pearl for school and everyday pencil notes, and a white plastic eraser for clean drawing work. The plastic erasers lift graphite with less pressure and leave less color behind, which is why most of our best erasers picks are white.

In one long-running penciltalk.org comparison, the Mars plastic beat a Pink Pearl; that’s one reviewer’s test, not ours. The Pentel Hi-Polymer is the white block that sits near the Pink Pearl on the same Amazon US best-seller list.

Pair the Pink Pearl with a Ticonderoga #2 pencil for the classic American school desk set.

Where is the Pink Pearl made?

Officecrave lists Malaysia as the country of origin for the Large 3-pack. Paper Mate is an American brand owned by Newell Brands, and the Pink Pearl came to it with the old Eberhard Faber line.

We couldn’t reach Paper Mate’s product page to confirm the origin there, so check the printed pack if it matters to you.

Frequently asked questions

Why are erasers pink?

Because of the Pink Pearl. The Benton County Museums say Eberhard Faber's erasers were pink from the Italian pumice it mixed into the rubber, and that later synthetic erasers are dyed pink because buyers expect it.

Is the Pink Pearl eraser made in the USA?

No. Officecrave lists Malaysia as the country of origin for the Large 3-pack, item 70501. Paper Mate is a US brand owned by Newell Brands.

Is the Pink Pearl good for drawing?

It works for sketches and school work. A penciltalk.org comparison ranked it behind a Staedtler Mars plastic, and we haven't tested it on drawing paper yet, so keep a white plastic eraser for finished drawings.

What's the difference between Pink Pearl Large and Medium?

Only the size. Paper Mate sells both as Pink Pearl; the Large comes in packs of 1, 3 and 12, and the Medium in bigger school packs such as the 24-count.

Who made the original Pink Pearl?

The Eberhard Faber Pencil Company of the US, which began selling stand-alone erasers to schools in 1916. The Eberhard line later became part of Paper Mate, which still makes Pink Pearls.

Does the Pink Pearl erase pen?

No. Paper Mate and its retailers sell it for pencil marks only. For ink, use a sand eraser such as the Tombow MONO Sand, or correction tape.
