What is Kuretake Gansai Tambi?
It’s a line of gansai, Japanese solid paints that you wet and paint with like watercolor, from Kuretake, a maker of sumi ink and brush pens. Kuretake says it developed Gansai Tambi from enthusiasts’ feedback, with many colors suited to Japanese landscapes.
Kuretake recommends using most colors straight from the pan rather than mixing, for the brightest color. It says the paint is popular abroad as well as in Japan, for illustrated letters (etegami), sketching, illustration, lettering and cards.
What makes gansai different from regular watercolor?
Kuretake says Gansai Tambi dissolves quickly, bleeds cleanly, and changes character with the amount of water: thick for opaque, bold color, thin for pale washes. It credits the clean bleeding to more than 100 years of making sumi ink.
The pans are larger than typical watercolor pans, Kuretake’s US listing notes, so both small and large brushes fit. Each pan works as its own palette: Kuretake points out that once you add water, there’s nothing to squeeze out of a tube.

Kuretake lists it at 235 × 17 × 295 mm (9.3 × 0.7 × 11.6 in) and 596 g. The 24-color set is 201 × 17 × 220 mm and 330 g.
What comes in the 48-color set?
48 pans of paint, a sheet in the bottom of the box naming each color, and an A5 color-sample sheet to swatch yourself, Kuretake says. The US listing adds that a protective sheet over the pans doubles as a mixing palette.
Are Gansai Tambi paints non-toxic?
Kuretake says they carry the AP seal from the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) and meet international safety standards.

No. Kuretake's sets don't include a water brush, so add your own; for painting on the go, a water brush such as the Pentel Aquash pairs well with them.
