How do you use the Brass Clip?
Slide it over the page edge of an open notebook to hold it flat, or clip it to the cover so it travels with you. Those are the two uses Traveler’s Company describes first.
The maker adds a third: the back has a hole, so you can pin the clip to a wall and hang a notebook refill as a small display. Beyond that, a spring clip of this size works as a page marker or holds a ticket to a page, which are our suggestions rather than the maker’s.
Which pattern should you choose?
It’s a matter of taste: both patterns are the same size, brass and price. The TRC logo version (43089006) carries the TRAVELER’S COMPANY mark, and the airplane version (43090006) repeats a small plane, a nod to the brand’s travel theme.
On Amazon US the two share one set of ratings, so neither is clearly more popular there. The airplane pattern is the one our cover shows.
How does brass change over time?
It darkens to a deeper, softer colour as it oxidizes and is handled, which Traveler’s Company presents as part of the appeal. The maker says the colour matures the more you use it.
If you write on your lap, on a train or outdoors, yes; a TRAVELER’S notebook’s elastic and leather cover make it want to close, and the clip solves that. On a desk with a heavy notebook, you may not need it.
It also fits the Passport size: Traveler’s Company makes its accessories, the Brass Clip included, for both sizes. In the US, imports sell for well above the Japanese price, which puts it in our $$$ band.
What are the downsides?
It’s pricey for a clip once imported, and solid brass adds weight to a notebook meant to travel light. Traveler’s Company doesn’t publish the clip’s weight, so check it in a shop if you carry a slim Passport setup.
Like any spring clip, it may leave a mark on thin paper if clipped deep into a page; we haven’t tested that yet, so clip near the edge until we have. The brass will also darken where you handle it most.
Where is the TRAVELER’S Brass Clip made?
In Japan: Traveler’s Company prints MADE IN JAPAN on the product page and says the clip comes from a factory in the old downtown area of Tokyo. The brand belongs to Designphil, the Tokyo company behind Midori. For brass that decorates rather than holds, see the TRAVELER’S Brass Charm TOKYO.
