What is the LAMY Z50 nib?

It’s LAMY’s standard steel nib, sold on its own so you can change how a LAMY pen writes. The same nib comes fitted to the safari, AL-star and studio, and LAMY sells it as a spare in every grade.

On October 22, 2026, Goulet Pens’ black and silver steel nibs sat at Nos. 53 and 54 on its best-seller list, with 307 and 572 reviews.

Which pens does the Z50 fit?

Almost every current LAMY fountain pen except the LAMY 2000. Goulet lists 18 models: abc, accent, aion, AL-star, cp1, dialog 3, dialog cc, ideos, imporium, joy, logo, Lx, nexx, pur, safari, scala, studio and vista.

That includes the LAMY safari, LAMY AL-star and LAMY studio. The LAMY 2000 has its own hooded gold nib and doesn’t take a Z50.

Which Z50 grade should you choose?

Pick by handwriting size: smaller writing, finer nib. That’s LAMY’s own advice in its nib guide.

LAMY grinds EF, F and B straight, rounds the M fully, and makes two special grades: LH for left-handers and A (Anfänger) for beginners. The 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9 mm italics write broad downstrokes and thin cross-strokes; see fountain pen nib sizes explained for how widths compare.

What are the LH and A nibs?

Two grades LAMY designs for particular writers: LH for left-handers and A for beginners. LAMY’s nib guide groups the LH with the M as fully rounded tips and says the LH is optimized for left-handed writing.

The A, for Anfänger, is LAMY’s nib for people learning to write with a fountain pen; LAMY’s nib guide says it supports beginners in their particular needs, and both grades are sold under the Z50 model.

Both are steel Z50s at the same price as the standard grades. For everyone else, LAMY’s own advice is simpler: match the width to your handwriting.

How do you swap a LAMY nib?

Pull the old nib straight off the feed and push the new one on. LAMY’s steel nibs clip over the feed without screws, so it takes seconds and no tools.

Many people grip the nib with a piece of tape to pull it off. Flush the pen first so ink doesn’t get on your fingers, and keep the old nib: it’s a spare.

Polished or black?

The same nib, in a different finish. LAMY sells the Z50 polished or black at the same price; Goulet lists more grades in polished steel, including the italics.

LAMY’s premium Z52 is a separate black stainless-steel nib at €14.90 (about US$17), and the Z53 is a specially shaped steel nib at €11.90 (about US$13) that LAMY says some users find close to gold.

Where is the LAMY Z50 made?

In Heidelberg, Germany. LAMY’s quality page says Heidelberg is its only production site, that it makes all its nibs, steel and gold, in-house, and that the nibs are ground and polished by hand.

For a cheap way to try italic writing on a LAMY, a 1.1 mm Z50 costs far less than a new pen. Left-handers can compare picks in best pens for left-handed writers.

Frequently asked questions

Which LAMY pens take the Z50 nib?

Goulet lists the abc, accent, aion, AL-star, cp1, dialog 3, dialog cc, ideos, imporium, joy, logo, Lx, nexx, pur, safari, scala, studio and vista. The LAMY 2000 uses a different nib.

Can I put a LAMY italic nib on my safari?

Yes. The 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9 mm italic Z50s push onto the same feed as the safari's standard nib.

What does the LAMY A nib mean?

A stands for Anfänger, beginner. LAMY designs it for people learning to write with a fountain pen and sells it under the Z50 model.

Does the LAMY Z50 come with a feed?

No. Goulet notes the feed isn't included; the nib slides onto the feed already in your pen.

What's the difference between the LAMY Z50 and Z52?

The Z50 is LAMY's standard steel nib, polished or black. LAMY lists the Z52 as a premium black stainless-steel nib at €14.90 (about US$17), against €8.90 (about US$10) for the Z50.

Is the LAMY Z50 nib made in Germany?

Yes. LAMY says it makes all its steel and gold nibs in-house in Heidelberg.
