What is the KOKUYO Gloo glue stick?

It is a glue stick from KOKUYO’s Gloo gluing line. KOKUYO describes Gloo as a rethink of gluing, a line of stick, liquid and tape glues and a tape cutter that is meant to be good-looking enough to keep on your desk. The stick page opens with a familiar complaint, glued paper whose corners curl up, and then offers three types.

For the Tombow equivalents, see the Shiwa Nashi PiT and Kieiro PiT guides. KOKUYO’s dry-tape alternative is the Dot Liner.

Which of the three types should you pick?

Pick by paper and by how you work. KOKUYO names the types by what they do.

Type KOKUYO name Use
Wrinkle-free Shiwa Naku Kirei thin paper that wrinkles
Color fades Iro ga Kieru see where you have glued
Strong Shikkari Haru a firm bond

KOKUYO does not publish strength or wrinkling tests, so these are the maker’s labels.

What do the sizes cost?

Larger sticks cost less per gram. KOKUYO lists these prices on the series page; it does not say whether tax is included.

Size Wrinkle-free Color fades Strong
About 10 g 170 yen (about US$1.08) 160 yen (about US$1.01) 160 yen (about US$1.01)
About 22 g 320 yen (about US$2.03) 300 yen (about US$1.90) 300 yen (about US$1.90)
About 40 g 500 yen (about US$3.16) not listed 470 yen (about US$2.97)

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. By our arithmetic the 10 g wrinkle-free stick costs 17 yen a gram, the 22 g about 14.5 and the 40 g 12.5.

Are there multi-packs?

Yes, in hanging packs. KOKUYO lists three-stick and five-stick packs of the 10 g disappearing-color and strong sticks at 480 and 800 yen (about US$3.04 and US$5.06), plus a pack of three 22 g disappearing-color sticks at 900 yen (about US$5.70). The disappearing-color 10 g stick also comes in black.

Which size should you buy?

The 10 g stick for a pencil case, the 22 g for a desk, the 40 g for heavy use. The prices above show the pattern: each step up costs less per gram, but a stick that dries out before you finish it is no saving. The 10 g wrinkle-free stick, for example, costs 170 yen, while the 40 g costs 500 yen for four times the glue, about 2.9 times the price. KOKUYO lists no 40 g disappearing-color stick on the page we read.

What does KOKUYO say about the shape of Gloo?

It says Gloo was designed to look good on a desk. The series page says the line wants you to feel like using it, making with it and leaving it out. It gives no dimensions or materials for the stick bodies, so we can’t compare them with other sticks.

How does it compare with other glues?

It is the same trio of ideas as Tombow’s PiT sticks. Both makers offer a wrinkle-free stick, a see-the-stripe stick and a strong one. The US version of the second idea is the Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Glue Stick. KOKUYO’s other Gloo glues are the liquid glue and the tape glue.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

KOKUYO’s series page doesn’t state a country of manufacture. The company is KOKUYO Co., Ltd. At 160 to 500 yen (about US$1.01 to US$3.16), every stick is in our $ band (under $5).
