Best Fountain Pen Inks for Ordinary Paper: 8 Picks

Compiled from 12 sources; we haven't tested these products ourselves yet. How we research

Quick answer

No fountain pen ink fully tames copy paper, so pick by color and pair it with a fine nib. Platinum Carbon Black is the waterproof black, J. Herbin Perle Noire a plain black, Waterman Serenity Blue the blue, Rohrer and Klingner Salix the blue-black, and Pelikan Brilliant Red or Waterman Audacious Red the reds. Noodler's X-Feather targets the worst paper.

Notes on these facts
  • Platinum Carbon Black fountain pen ink, 60 ml bottle (INKC-1500): Made by Platinum Pen Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). Made in Japan: Luiban, a Berlin pen shop, lists Japan as the country of origin for the 60 ml INKC-1500, and Phidon Pens in Canada describes it as made in Japan. Platinum's Japanese product page (read on October 21, 2026) doesn't state a country. Source. Price: example listing.
  • J. Herbin Perle Noire fountain pen ink, 30 ml bottle: Made by J. Herbin (Jacques Herbin), Exacompta Clairefontaine group, France. Made in France: Jacques Herbin's French and English product pages (read in full on October 30, 2026) both say 'Fabrication française' / 'Made in France' for the Perle noire page and the writing-ink range it belongs to. The page covers all four formats, so it doesn't single out the 30 ml bottle. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Waterman Serenity Blue fountain pen ink, 50 ml bottle: Made by Waterman S.A., Paris (part of Newell Brands). Made in France: Goldspot lists the 50 ml bottle as made in France, and Officeworks (Australia) gives France as the country of origin; its barcode 3034325106298 carries a French GS1 prefix. Waterman was founded in New York in 1884 but today is Waterman S.A., based in Paris, owned by Newell Brands since 2000 (Wikipedia). Waterman's own site (waterman.com) blocks automated reading behind a browser check, so we couldn't read its French or English product page; the ADI distributor listing seen in search also gives France. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Rohrer & Klingner Salix iron gall fountain pen ink, 50 ml bottle: Made by Rohrer & Klingner KG, Zella-Mehlis, Germany. Made in Germany: Rohrer & Klingner's English home page gives its address as Meininger Str. 1-3, Zella-Mehlis, and says it has produced ink since 1892. Pure Pens says each bottle is produced by hand and traces the company to Leipzig. We found no 'made in' statement for this bottle itself, and the maker's German pages returned server errors when we tried to open them. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red fountain pen ink, 62.5 ml bottle: Made by Pelikan Group GmbH (Germany), owned by Hamelin since December 13, 2023. Made in Germany: Pulp Addiction's listing for the 62.5 ml Brilliant Red bottle says Pelikan's inks are made in Germany, and Pelikan's English product page for the same bottle size in Royal Blue lists Germany. Pelikan's German 4001 page doesn't state a country, and the English page for the red bottle refused connections when we tried on October 30, 2026. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Waterman Audacious Red fountain pen ink, 50 ml bottle: Made by Waterman S.A., Paris (part of Newell Brands). Made in France: Goldspot's product page lists the bottle as dye based and made in France. A retailer's safety notice (missing-pen.com, text in German) names Newell Brands (Waterman) at Saint-Herblain, France as manufacturer. Waterman's own site (waterman.com) blocks automated reading behind a browser check, so we couldn't read its product page. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Platinum Classic Ink fountain pen ink, 60 ml bottle (INKK-2000), six shades: Made by Platinum Pen Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). Made in Japan: Mountain of Ink's Platinum index page says Platinum ink is made in Japan. Platinum's Japanese product page for INKK-2000 (read on October 30, 2026) doesn't state a country. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Noodler's X-Feather Black fountain pen ink, 3 oz bottle (19046): Made by Noodler's Ink, Massachusetts (run by Nathan Tardif). Made in United States: Noodler's About Us page says its ink is 100% made in the USA from cap to glass to ink. We found no separate origin statement for X-Feather itself. Source. Price: example listing.

Key takeaways

  • The only copy paper tests we found are Mountain of Ink's: Salix and Platinum Classic feathered slightly, Brilliant Red and Audacious Red a little with larger nibs, and Carbon Black feathered at every nib size on 24 lb paper.
  • Mountain of Ink timed Serenity Blue at about 20 seconds to dry and the other measured inks at 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Goulet says to flush Carbon Black (pigment) at least once every 7 days and not to leave Salix (iron gall) in a pen longer than 7 days; the dye inks rinse out with water.
  • Noodler's X-Feather is the 1 ink here sold to resist feathering, but reviewers disagree on whether it works.
  • A fine nib helps more than any ink: Pelikan and Waterman reds feathered mostly with larger nibs.

What is the best fountain pen ink for ordinary paper?

No fountain pen ink fully tames copy paper, so choose by color and pair it with a fine nib. In the tests we found, the inks that handled 20 to 24 lb copy paper best were Rohrer & Klingner Salix and Platinum Classic Ink, with only slight feathering. Every pick below is a sourced option, not a guarantee.

  • Waterproof black: Platinum Carbon Black. Why it’s here: a pigment ink that Platinum says won’t redissolve once dry. Caveat: it feathered at every nib size on 24 lb copy paper, and it needs weekly cleaning.
  • Plain black: J. Herbin Perle Noire. Why it’s here: a dye black in 10, 30 and 100 ml bottles and cartridges, made in France. Caveat: we found no measured copy paper result, only a shop’s claim.
  • Blue: Waterman Serenity Blue. Why it’s here: quick to dry and long called safe in pens. Caveat: it feathered with all nib sizes on 20 lb copy paper.
  • Blue-black: Rohrer & Klingner Salix. Why it’s here: an iron gall ink with no feathering on friendly paper and only slight feathering on 24 lb copy paper. Caveat: we couldn’t confirm it is still current.
  • Red: Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red and Waterman Audacious Red. Why they’re here: both are bright, bottle-and-cartridge-friendly reds with a little feathering on copy paper with larger nibs; Brilliant Red dries 10 seconds faster in Mountain of Ink’s tests.
  • Colors: Platinum Classic Ink. Why it’s here: six shades that darken toward black, with only slight feathering on copy paper.
  • Rough paper: Noodler’s X-Feather. Why it’s here: the one ink here sold not to feather, though tests disagree.

How did we choose these picks?

We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing. We took the ink families that people name for ordinary paper, checked each against its maker’s page where we could read it, and recorded the copy paper evidence in reviewer tests. Where no test existed, the table says so.

How do these inks compare on ordinary paper?

All eight are bottled inks; they differ in chemistry, drying time and how they behaved on copy paper.

Ink Type Bottle Dry time (Mountain of Ink) Copy paper result Band
Platinum Carbon Black Pigment 60 ml 60 s Feathered at every nib size (24 lb) $$$
J. Herbin Perle Noire Dye 10, 30, 100 ml Not measured No test found $$
Waterman Serenity Blue Dye 50 ml About 20 s Feathering at all nib sizes (20 lb) $$
Rohrer & Klingner Salix Iron gall 50 ml 40 s Slight feathering (24 lb) $$
Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red Not stated 62.5 ml, 30 ml 40 s Some feathering, larger nibs (20 lb) $$
Waterman Audacious Red Dye 50 ml 50 s Some feathering, larger nibs (20 lb) $$
Platinum Classic Ink Iron gall or dye (sources conflict) 60 ml 30 to 50 s Slight feathering (24 lb) $$$
Noodler’s X-Feather Water resistant 3 oz Over 30 s (Goulet) Minimal in one test; none better than LAMY Black in another $$

Why does ink feather or bleed through on ordinary paper?

Cheap paper is more absorbent and less sized, so ink spreads sideways (feathering) or soaks through (bleed-through). Show-through is the faint ghost of a line from the back with no ink reaching it. The reviewers in our sources judge each separately, and the same ink can feather without bleeding.

Two patterns in the tests: larger nibs lay down more ink and feathered more (Brilliant Red, Audacious Red), and a wet nib or flex nib did the same on Salix and the brown Classic shades. Our ink properties guide explains how dry time shifts with nib and paper.

Which pen works best on ordinary paper?

A fine nib, because it lays down the least ink. A Pilot Fine writes about like a Western Extra Fine, which is why the Pilot Metropolitan in Fine suits copy paper. The TWSBI ECO comes in EF and F steel nibs and also a 1.1 mm stub, and a broad nib will feather more on cheap sheets in any of these inks.

Writing style matters too, but we found no test that measured it; a lighter touch and a finished line before you turn the page can only help. For the paper itself, see Hammermill copy paper.

Which inks need extra care?

The pigment and iron gall picks: flush them weekly. Goulet says to clean Platinum Carbon Black out of a pen at least once a week so the pigment doesn’t clog the feed, and advises not leaving Salix in a pen longer than a week. Platinum’s care page asks owners to soak the nib section in lukewarm water about once a month and gives no Classic Ink rule. The dye inks (Perle Noire, Serenity Blue, Audacious Red) rinse out with water.

Our sources conflict on Classic Ink’s chemistry: Goulet and Mountain of Ink call it iron gall, while Platinum’s own spec line says water-based dye. Treat it with the iron gall care until you know.

What about X-Feather?

It is the only ink here sold to stop feathering, but treat it as helpful, not guaranteed. Pen Addict saw minimal feathering on 20 lb copy paper, and a Fountain Pen Network tester found it no better than LAMY Black. Some forum users report it smearing on glossy, good paper, which is the opposite of what a coated notebook needs. For paper this bad, a pen switch may be the better fix.

What if no fountain pen ink works?

Use a different kind of pen. A ballpoint such as the Uni Jetstream or a fine pigment gel pen such as the Uni-ball Signo UM-151 does not rely on thin, water-based ink soaking into the page. We cover both in their own guides, and the Signo UM-151 comes in 0.28, 0.38 and 0.5 mm with pigment ink.

Frequently asked questions

Which fountain pen ink feathers least on copy paper?

In the tests we found, Rohrer and Klingner Salix and Platinum Classic Ink showed only slight feathering on 24 lb copy paper. Pen Addict also saw minimal feathering from Noodler's X-Feather on 20 lb copy paper, though a Fountain Pen Network tester found it no better than LAMY Black.

What is the difference between feathering and bleed-through?

Feathering is ink spreading sideways into hairy lines around your writing. Bleed-through is ink soaking all the way to the other side of the page. Show-through is the faint ghost of a line visible from the back without any ink reaching it.

Does a finer nib help on cheap paper?

Yes. A finer nib lays down less ink, and the Pelikan Brilliant Red and Waterman Audacious Red reviews saw feathering and bleed-through mostly with the larger nibs.

Is Platinum Carbon Black good for copy paper?

It is waterproof once dry, but Mountain of Ink saw it feather at every nib size on Staples 24 lb copy paper. Pick it for permanence on good paper, not for copy paper.

Do these inks work in a Pilot Metropolitan?

The dye inks do. Pigment and iron gall inks such as Carbon Black and Salix need more careful cleaning, so flush the pen every week or so if you use them.

Does Noodler's X-Feather really stop feathering?

Reviewers disagree. Goulet says it is designed not to feather on most papers, Noodler's own black page lists only archival, bullet proof, forge resistant and water resistant, and one forum tester saw no difference from LAMY Black.

What if no fountain pen ink works on my paper?

Switch pens, not ink: a ballpoint such as the Uni Jetstream or a fine pigment gel pen such as the Uni-ball Signo UM-151 copes with cheap paper better than most fountain pens do.
