Notes on these facts
  • Made by Lennon Tool Bar (Tamsui, Taiwan). Made in Taiwan: Yoseka's page says Lennon Tool Bar was founded in 2014 in Tamsui, Taiwan and calls the series Winter Tonics in Taiwan. It does not print a made-in line, and the maker's own site would not load for us. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Colors: names per Yoseka Stationery: Lennon Tool Bar Sesame Oil (swab photo), checked November 2, 2026. One ink. The three tints were sampled from Yoseka's swab photo: the pale wash, the denser stroke and the ring of a dried drop. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.
  • How we test and disclose samples: How we test stationery.
  • Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).

Key takeaways

  • Yoseka lists Sesame Oil as a dye-based ink in a 30 ml (1 fl oz) bottle, the first of four 2021 Winter Limited colors (Sesame Oil, Cabbage, Silkie and Wolfberry).
  • The color is a warm mid-tone brown named for the smell of hot sesame oil; Yoseka's swab photo shows a tan wash, a denser caramel brown and a gray-violet ring where a drop dried.
  • Yoseka listed it at US$24.00, which is about US$0.80 per ml, in our $$$ band ($20-75), and it was sold out on November 2, 2026.
  • The page tags Sesame Oil purple yet describes it as brown; the swab shows why, because the pooled edge of a dried drop turns gray-violet (#746772).
  • Lennon Tool Bar's own site would not load for us, so the origin, the colors' story and the series dates come from Yoseka's page only.

What is Lennon Tool Bar Sesame Oil?

It is a brown fountain pen ink named for the smell of sesame oil hitting a hot pan. Yoseka’s page says it is “a warm mid-tone brown inspired by the fragrance, and deep flavor of sesame oil”, dye-based, in a 30 ml (1 fl oz) bottle.

It is the first of four inks in Lennon Tool Bar’s 2021 Winter Limited series, which Yoseka says is called Winter Tonics in Taiwan. The others are Cabbage, Silkie and Wolfberry, and all four names are ingredients of the winter chicken stew that Yoseka’s page describes.

Yoseka’s page prints the Chinese name beside the English one. In pinyin it is ma you, meaning sesame oil.

What color is it on paper?

Tan when thin, caramel brown when dense, and gray-violet where a drop dries. Yoseka’s swab photo shows all three on one sheet, and the table gives the tints we sampled from it.

Where on the swab Tint we sampled
Thin wash, a wide light stroke #CC9F71, a light tan
Denser stroke, a narrow line #9D6845, a warm caramel brown
Edge of a dried drop #746772, a gray-violet
Three tones of Lennon Tool Bar Sesame Oil on paper: a light tan wash, a dense caramel brown and a gray-violet ring
The three tones sampled from Yoseka's swab photo; they are representative tints, not a measured color. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.

That gray-violet edge explains a conflict on the page. Yoseka’s description says brown, but its product tag says purple. Both fit: the ink is brown in a pen line and takes a purplish cast where it pools.

What do the bottle and box look like?

A 30 ml glass bottle with a gold-tone cap, a white label with a round brown spot, and a pale card box. Yoseka’s photo shows a small embossed flower on the box. A 2020 review of Lennon Tool Bar’s summer inks describes the same card boxes and 30 ml glass bottles for that season.

The maker lists no bottle height or width, so our drawing is in proportion rather than to scale.

Is it a good ink for everyday writing?

We can’t say, because neither Yoseka nor the maker we could reach gives flow, lubrication or pen-safety notes. The page says only that it is dye-based. The 2020 review found the summer inks wet-flowing and not lubricated, which is a different season and not a claim about this one.

On Yoseka’s page, a buyer calls Sesame Oil a soft camel brown that is light but legible. That is one reader’s view, not our test.

Who is the Sesame Oil ink for?

It suits someone who wants a dated, limited-edition winter brown. Yoseka lists it as one of four colors in the 2021 Winter Limited series.

  • Collecting: the 2021 Winter Limited series is a dated release, and Yoseka showed it sold out.

Skip it if you need waterproof ink: Yoseka states no water resistance, and it calls the ink dye-based. For beginner-friendly picks, see best fountain pen inks for beginners.

What does it cost, and can you still buy it?

Yoseka listed it at US$24.00 for 30 ml, about US$0.80 a milliliter, in our $$$ band ($20-75). It showed Sold Out with a notify-me button on November 2, 2026.

Yoseka listed Cabbage and Wolfberry at the same price, and it has a separate ink sample listing for the series, which we did not price. We did not find another seller we could open, since JetPens blocks us. For wider options see best fountain pen inks.

Where is Lennon Tool Bar from?

Tamsui in Taiwan, per Yoseka. Yoseka says the brand was founded in 2014 and started by promoting indigo dyeing crafts, drawing its colors from that tradition.

We could not load Lennon Tool Bar’s own site, so we could not confirm the founding date, the series dates or where the ink is made. Treat them as Yoseka’s statements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lennon Tool Bar Sesame Oil a brown or a purple ink?

Brown. Yoseka calls it a warm mid-tone brown, though its photo tag says purple. The swab shows why: thin strokes are tan, and a dried drop leaves a gray-violet edge.

How much ink is in the bottle?

30 ml (1 fl oz). At Yoseka's US$24.00 that works out to about US$0.80 a milliliter.

Is Sesame Oil dye-based or pigmented?

Dye-based, per Yoseka's product page. It makes no waterproof or archival claim, so treat it as water-soluble.

What does the Chinese name mean?

Yoseka's page prints the Chinese name, which is ma you in pinyin and means sesame oil. The ink is named for the smell and flavor of hot sesame oil in a pan.

What are the other inks in the 2021 Winter Limited set?

Cabbage, Silkie (a black-boned chicken) and Wolfberry, all sold by Yoseka as Winter Tonics inks at the same US$24.00. The set is themed on winter foods in Taiwan.

Can you still buy Sesame Oil?

Not at Yoseka on November 2, 2026: it showed Sold Out with a notify-me button. We did not find another seller we could open, since JetPens blocks us.

Is it a good brown for beginners?

Unknown. Yoseka says nothing on flow or pen safety. The only user comments are on its own page, where a buyer calls it a soft camel brown that is still legible.

Where is Lennon Tool Bar based?

In Tamsui, Taiwan, per Yoseka, which says the brand was founded in 2014 and began by promoting indigo dyeing crafts. We could not read the maker's own site to confirm that.
