Compiled from 6 sources; we haven't tested this product ourselves yet. How we research

Quick answer

The Makers Cabinet Ferrule is a pencil extender made of solid brass and stainless steel. A twist collet grips a 7-8 mm pencil so you can use it down to a short stub, and a clip and a screw-in eraser holder finish the other end. Makers Cabinet lists it in our $$$$ band and gives no weight or length.

Notes on these facts
  • Made by Makers Cabinet (designed in London). Made in China (primarily Shenzhen), with selected components from the UK, Italy and Japan: Makers Cabinet's FAQ says every product is designed in London and that production takes place primarily in Shenzhen, China, with selected components sourced from the UK, Italy and Japan. It does not say which components of the Ferrule come from where. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Colors: names per Makers Cabinet (US store), checked November 3, 2026. Makers Cabinet lists one Ferrule, in brass. The tint was sampled by hand from the maker's lead product photo; brass darkens with use. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

Key takeaways

  • Makers Cabinet says the Ferrule holds pencils 7-8 mm across, so standard round and hexagonal wooden pencils fit.
  • It comes with three 25 mm extendable erasers and six incense cedar pencils (three HB and three 2B) made by Kitaboshi in Japan.
  • The body is solid brass and stainless steel; the erasers are TPU rubber, and the packaging is paper-based.
  • Makers Cabinet gives no weight, length or diameter for the Ferrule, so none appears here.
  • On Makers Cabinet's own page the Ferrule shows 4.8 out of 5 from 58 reviews (read November 3, 2026); one reviewer found the eraser holder tight.

What is the Makers Cabinet Ferrule?

It is a brass pencil extender: a metal holder that grips the end of a pencil so you can keep writing with it after it is too short to hold. Makers Cabinet, a London design studio that sells machined brass desk tools, says the Ferrule takes “the best features of pencil extenders” and the “attributes of premium pen design”, and adds the thoughtfulness of a mechanical pencil, to waste less of each pencil.

The company’s FAQ says its tools are made of metal, mainly solid machined brass and carbon steel, with no plastics. The Ferrule’s page names solid brass and stainless steel.

How do you load a pencil and an eraser?

Both ends work the same way: twist open, insert, twist shut. The one-page instruction sheet shows two steps for the pencil. Twist the front section anticlockwise to open the collet, push the pencil in to the depth you want, then twist clockwise until it clicks. To extend the pencil further, repeat the same steps.

The eraser end is similar. Partly turn the eraser holder anticlockwise without fully unscrewing it, slide a rubber in, and turn clockwise to close the holder around it. The same motion lets you adjust how far the eraser sticks out.

Which pencils fit the Ferrule?

Makers Cabinet says it holds pencils 7-8 mm across. That covers most round and hexagonal wooden pencils, such as a Blackwing 602, which our guide lists at about 7.5 mm. We have not tried it with one, so check a thicker or lacquered barrel against that 7-8 mm range before you buy.

The maker’s own refill pencils are 120 mm long cedar, “the perfect length for Ferrule”, it says. For other pencils to try, see our best wooden pencils for writing.

What is in the box and what are the refills?

One Ferrule, three erasers and six pencils. The page lists three 25 mm extendable erasers and three HB plus three 2B incense cedar pencils, made by Kitaboshi in Japan. The erasers are TPU rubber and the packaging is paper-based and 100% recyclable.

Refills are sold separately: six 120 mm HB pencils in PEFC-certified incense cedar, and six rubber erasers made in Japan. Both sit in our $$ band ($5-20). A vegetable-tanned leather sheath that fits either the Ferrule or the Lazlo pen sits in the $$$ band ($20-75).

Who is the Ferrule for?

It suits people who already own good pencils and want to use them to the end. The 7-8 mm grip fits standard wooden pencils, and the replaceable eraser and cedar refills mean it keeps working without other tools. We have not tested the Ferrule, and Makers Cabinet gives no weight, so the balance for long writing sessions is unknown.

It is a gift-priced desk tool rather than an everyday user: it sits in our top price band, so if you only want to stretch a stub, a plastic extender does the same basic job for far less.

What do owners say?

On Makers Cabinet’s own page, owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 58 reviews (read November 3, 2026), with praise for the make and some notes on feel. These are reviews on the maker’s own store, so treat them as a sample, not an independent test.

One owner found the eraser holder “a smidge too tight” to push erasers in and pull them out as they wear. Another says it took time to get used to the weight and thickness and uses it without the eraser part. Others praise the weight and the hexagonal lower shaft with a rounded upper shaft for comfort.

Where is the Ferrule made?

Designed in London and made primarily in Shenzhen, China, per Makers Cabinet’s FAQ. The same FAQ says selected components come from the UK, Italy and Japan, and the cedar pencils and erasers are stated as made in Japan. The page does not say which parts of the Ferrule itself come from where.

Frequently asked questions

What size pencil does the Ferrule take?

Makers Cabinet says it holds pencils with a 7-8 mm diameter. Its own refill pencils are 120 mm long, so a standard wooden pencil shortened by use fits as well.

Does the Ferrule come with pencils?

Yes: three HB and three 2B incense cedar pencils made in Japan, plus three 25 mm extendable erasers, according to Makers Cabinet's page.

How do you change the pencil in a Ferrule?

Twist the front section anticlockwise to open the collet, push the pencil in to the depth you want, then twist clockwise until it clicks, per the maker's instruction sheet.

Can you use the Ferrule without the eraser?

Yes. One owner on the maker's page says they use it without the eraser part to cut weight; Makers Cabinet does not say whether the eraser holder is removable for that purpose.

How heavy is the Ferrule?

Not stated. Makers Cabinet gives no weight, length or diameter; one owner calls it heavy and thick, another likes the weight, and we have not weighed one.

Does Makers Cabinet sell refills for the Ferrule?

Yes: six 120 mm HB cedar pencils made by Kitaboshi in Japan, and six rubber erasers made in Japan, sold separately. A leather sheath that also fits the Lazlo pen is sold too.

Is the Ferrule made in the UK?

It is designed in London. Makers Cabinet says production is primarily in Shenzhen, China, with some components from the UK, Italy and Japan.
