Key takeaways

  • Tombow says you can peel and reposition a piece for about 1 to 2 minutes after joining it, which suits craft work.

What is Tombow Shiwa Nashi PiT?

It is a glue stick designed not to wrinkle paper. Tombow describes it as a stick that bonds neatly without wrinkles. The glue is built on alcohol with less water than a conventional glue stick, which is why thin paper is less likely to buckle. Shiwa nashi is Japanese for no wrinkles.

It is one of several glue sticks in Tombow’s PiT range. Our Tombow Kieiro PiT guide covers the blue-when-wet stick, and our Tombow history covers the company.

What sizes and prices does it come in?

Three sizes, from 10 g to 39 g. Tombow lists these, with tax.

Size Part number Glue weight Price with tax
S PT-TAS 10 g 154 yen (about US$0.97)
N (medium) PT-NAS 21 g 286 yen (about US$1.81)
G (large) PT-GAS 39 g 440 yen (about US$2.78)

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. Tombow gives sizes by glue thickness and weight but no body dimensions, so the figure shows weights only.

Why does it not wrinkle thin paper?

Because there is less water in the glue. Tombow says the glue uses an alcohol component that holds back moisture, so thin paper keeps its shape better than with a standard stick. That matters for planner pages, tracing paper and other thin sheets, but the maker gives no test and no list of paper types, so try a scrap first.

Can you reposition a piece?

For about 1 to 2 minutes after joining. Tombow says you can peel the sheets apart and correct the position during that window, which it calls ideal for craft work. After that, the bond should be treated as fixed.

Which size is the best value?

The larger the stick, the cheaper each gram. By our arithmetic from Tombow’s tax-included prices, the S works out at 15.4 yen a gram, the N at 13.6 and the G at 11.3. For comparison, Kieiro PiT’s N is 22 g for the same 286 yen and its G is 40 g for 440 yen, so the two sticks cost almost the same per gram. Pick the S for a pencil case and the G for a desk.

What should you not glue with it?

Not receipts or fax paper. Tombow’s page includes a note that the glue causes discoloration, so it should not be used on receipts or faxes. Those are thermal papers that darken easily.

How does it compare with other glues?

It is the stick to choose for thin paper, while other PiT sticks cover strength or visibility. For a see-where-you-glued stripe, use the Kieiro PiT. For a dry tape instead of wet glue, see the KOKUYO Dot Liner or the Tombow MONO Adhesive Permanent.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

Tombow’s page doesn’t state a country of manufacture. The company is based in Tokyo. At 154 to 440 yen with tax (about US$0.97 to US$2.78), all three sizes are in our $ band (under $5).

Frequently asked questions

What does Shiwa Nashi mean?

Wrinkle-free. Tombow uses it as the product's selling point.

Why does it wrinkle paper less?

Tombow says the glue is an alcohol-based formula with low water content. Water is what swells and wrinkles thin paper.

Is the bond adjustable?

Yes, for about 1 to 2 minutes after joining, per Tombow.

What should you not use it on?

Receipts and fax paper, because Tombow says it discolors them.

What sizes exist?

S 10 g, N 21 g and G 39 g. There is no XS size in this range.

Is it for crafts?

Tombow calls the repositioning ability a good fit for craft work. It does not list specific materials.

Does it work on thermal paper?

Tombow warns against receipts and fax paper, which are thermal types, so we would not use it there.
