What is Tombow Kieiro PiT?

It is a glue stick that shows where you have glued. Tombow describes it as a strong blue glue stick: the glue is blue when you rub it on and goes colorless when it dries. Because you can see the stripe, Tombow says you avoid the usual problems of patches left unglued, which later peel, and too-thick layers that waste glue.

The line is part of Tombow’s PiT range of glues. Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. is also the maker of the MONO Adhesive Permanent tape runner, and our Tombow history covers the company.

What sizes and prices does it come in?

Four sizes, from 5 g to 40 g. Tombow’s page lists the following, all with tax.

Size Part number Glue weight Price with tax
XS PT-XSC 5 g 132 yen (about US$0.84)
S (slim) PT-TC 10 g 154 yen (about US$0.97)
N (medium) PT-NC 22 g 286 yen (about US$1.81)
G (large) PT-GC 40 g 440 yen (about US$2.78)

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. The listing separates the sizes by glue thickness as well as weight, but gives no body dimensions, so we show only the weights in the figure above.

How well does it stick?

Tombow calls it a fast, strong bond for paper through card. The company says its quick bonding and strength suit everything from ordinary paper to heavier card. It does not publish a test or a peel figure, so treat that as a maker claim.

Water-based glue sticks can wrinkle thin paper. Tombow offers a separate Shiwa Nashi PiT for that case; see our Shiwa Nashi PiT guide.

Is there a refillable version?

Yes, a 20 g refillable type. Tombow lists the refillable Kieiro PiT body as PT-NCR at 319 yen with tax (about US$2.02) and the 20 g refill cartridge as PR-NCR at 242 yen (about US$1.53). It uses a fin-shaped holder for the glue that Tombow says reduces leftover glue, and you can swap the cartridge without touching the glue.

To refill, Tombow says to remove the cap, wind the yellow glue holder fully out, press the two arrows and pull the old cartridge out, push in the new one with the squares aligned, and wind the glue back in.

Tombow also lists a slim, refillable Kieiro PiT Hosomi and a Neon Yellow version with neon yellow glue; each has its own guide.

How does it compare with other disappearing-color sticks?

It follows the same idea as the Elmer’s purple stick. Both show a colored stripe that clears when dry. Our Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Glue Stick guide covers the US option. For a dry, no-mess option, see the Tsukineko Essential Glue Pad or the KOKUYO Dot Liner tape runner.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

Tombow’s page doesn’t state a country of manufacture. The company is based in Tokyo. At 132 to 440 yen with tax (about US$0.84 to US$2.78), every size is in our $ band (under $5).

Frequently asked questions

What color is the glue?

Blue when you apply it, colorless once dry, per Tombow.

Why use a glue that shows color?

Tombow says the blue lets you see what you have covered, so you avoid streaks, thick patches and missed spots that later peel.

How many sizes are there?

Four: XS 5 g, S 10 g, N 22 g and G 40 g. The refillable type is separate and holds 20 g.

Can you refill it?

Only the refillable version. Its body is part PT-NCR and the 20 g refill is PR-NCR; the other sizes are used up.

What does it stick?

Tombow says ordinary paper up to card. It does not give a list of other materials.

Is it made from recycled plastic?

Tombow says at least 70 percent of the plastic by weight, excluding the glue, is recycled, and the line is Eco Mark certified.

How is it different from a normal glue stick?

The color, which clears as it dries. Our Elmer's Disappearing Purple Glue Stick uses the same idea with a purple tint.
