What is the Maruman Septcouleur notebook?

It is a compact twin-wire notebook with a fine 3 mm grid and 100 sheets, sold in six matte colors. Maruman, a Japanese stationery maker, describes it as made for people who live naturally, with six “color stories” that look like personal choices but still read as put together.

English shops spell the line Septcouleur; Maruman’s Japanese pages write the name in katakana. The A5 and A6 are the notebooks of the line we read; Maruman also lists related items under the same name, such as memo pads and binders.

What sizes does it come in?

Two sizes, A5 and A6, each 17 mm thick with 100 sheets. Maruman lists the body and the page separately, height first.

A5 (N768) A6 (N769)
Body (H × W × D) 212 × 158 × 17 mm (8.3 × 6.2 × 0.7 in) 152 × 116 × 17 mm (6.0 × 4.6 × 0.7 in)
Page (H × W) 210 × 147 mm (8.3 × 5.8 in) 150 × 105 mm (5.9 × 4.1 in)
Weight 301 g 154 g
Maruman price ¥1,210 (about US$7.70) ¥990 (about US$6.30)

The A5 page is the standard 210 mm tall but only 147 mm wide, a little narrower than ISO A5 (148 mm). The 158 mm body is wider than the 147 mm page.

What is the paper and grid like?

The paper is 80 g/m² Japanese writing paper ruled with a 3 mm grid across the full page. Maruman says the grid is finer than a standard one and printed in a pale gray, so your writing and colors stand out. It describes the paper as thick with some cushion, so writing feels smooth.

Maruman gives no ink or pen guidance, and we haven’t tested fountain pens or markers on it. For a ruled Maruman notebook, see our Maruman Mnemosyne A5 notebook.

Can you use it as a monthly planner?

Yes, if you rule it yourself: the A5 page is 49 squares wide, which divides into seven columns of seven squares. The page is 70 squares tall, enough for a four-square title row and six week rows of eleven squares. We worked that out from Maruman’s page size.

The notebook has no printed dates, so it works from any month. Our how to choose a planner guide covers the dated alternatives.

What are the cover and binding like?

A new Maruman cover material with a soft, slightly moist feel, bound with twin wire and pink-gold rings. Maruman says the cover is PVC with an impregnated paper surface that wipes clean of dirt and droplets, flexes without losing its shape and is not waterproof. Maruman adds that its S.C. binding keeps the spine looking stylish.

The rings are pink gold in color.

Which color and size should you choose?

The A6 for a bag or a habit log, the A5 for a planner or study notes, in our view. At 154 g the A6 is half the A5’s 301 g. Maruman lists six colors in both sizes: Sunny Yellow, Crisp White, Comfort Mint, Spirit Blue, Feathery Pink and Graceful Lilac.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

In Japan, per Maruman’s own product pages for both sizes. Maruman’s list prices with tax are ¥1,210 (about US$7.70) for the A5 and ¥990 (about US$6.30) for the A6, at 158 yen to the dollar, which puts both in our $$ band ($5–20) before shipping.

We found no US retailer page we could read, so we have no US price, and we didn’t read Maruman’s shop pages.
