What is the Five Minute Journal?
The Five Minute Journal is a guided gratitude journal: each day you fill in five short prompts, three in the morning and two at night. Intelligent Change launched it in 2013 and calls it the original gratitude journal that started the guided journaling movement.
It isn’t a blank notebook or a planner. Every page is pre-printed with the same prompts, so the habit takes a few minutes and there’s no blank page to stare at.

What are the Five Minute Journal prompts?
The morning asks for three things you’re grateful for, what would make today great, and a daily affirmation; the night asks for the day’s highlights and a lesson learned. An inspirational quote heads each page, and a weekly challenge appears once a week.
Intelligent Change frames it as two routines. The morning sets the tone for the day; the night section, in its words, has you count your blessings in reverse by noting what sparked joy and what you learned.
How big is it, and will it fit an A5 cover?
At about 134 × 218 mm it is 14 mm narrower and 8 mm taller than A5 (148 × 210 mm). Most A5 journal covers will hold it, but loosely, and a tight-fitting A5 cover may be too short.
The six-month book is thicker than a typical 192-page A5 notebook. We haven’t measured its thickness yet; Intelligent Change lists a 395 g shipping weight for the boxed journal.
How does it compare to other guided journals?
It is the shortest daily commitment of the popular guided journals: five prompts a day for six months. Five-year memory books ask for one line a day instead.
| Five Minute Journal | Q&A a Day | One Line a Day | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily task | 5 prompts, morning and night | Answer one question | Write a line or two |
| Lasts | 6 months | 5 years | 5 years |
| Dated | Undated | Dated by day of year | Dated by day of year |
| Focus | Gratitude, intentions, reflection | Memory, self-knowledge | Memory |
If you want planning rather than reflection, Intelligent Change’s own Productivity Planner uses the same build with a daily task layout. Our best 5-year journals guide compares the long-haul memory books.
Which colour should you choose?
The Original Linen is the core edition; the black, pink and green covers have the same pages. Linen shows marks over six months of daily handling; Bold Black hides them best. Patterned editions come and go, so check Intelligent Change’s store for current ones.
How popular is the Five Minute Journal?
Very: on October 22, 2026 its Amazon US listing had 17,976 ratings and ranked No. 4 in Personal Organizers. Intelligent Change says more than four million of its products have been sold worldwide, and lists stockists such as Papersource and Papersmiths.
Where is the Five Minute Journal made?
Intelligent Change’s product page says it’s made in China. The company says its newest products use 100% recycled, FSC-certified paper and natural fabric bindings such as linen and cotton. Intelligent Change was founded by Alex Ikonn and UJ Ramdas; the review site Develop Good Habits describes it as based in Toronto, Canada.

No, it's undated. You write the date yourself, which is why a missed day doesn't leave a blank page behind.
How big is the Five Minute Journal?
