What is the MUJI Planted Tree Paper Notebook?
It’s MUJI’s basic lined notebook, sold five at a time with a different coloured cloth spine on each. The B5 five-pack is the one MUJI USA tags as a best seller, and MUJI Japan sells it in several sizes and rulings.
MUJI Japan says the paper comes from fast-growing trees planted for the purpose, and MUJI USA links the line to its afforestation work. The spines are meant for sorting: one colour per class, project or kind of note.

Which versions are there?
In Japan, the five-pack comes in B5 at 6 mm or 7 mm, and in A5 and A6 at 6 mm. MUJI Japan also sells the same planted-tree paper as double-ring notebooks and loose-leaf refills.
MUJI USA lists 6 mm and 7 mm five-packs and a separate “Bleed Proof Lined” B5 five-pack at 6 mm, which averaged 4.6 stars from 22 reviews when we checked. Japan sells a matching “less show-through” (裏うつりしにくい) B5 pack at 7 mm.
Is it good paper for pens?
MUJI USA says the sheets are thin but take highlighters and pens without bleeding through. Reviewers on MUJI USA call the lines light and the paper bleed-proof, and MUJI Japan’s B5 pack averaged 5 out of 5 from 79 reviews when we read it.
We haven’t tested it yet. A thin notebook paper like this usually shows some writing through the sheet with wet gel ink and fountain pens, so expect ghosting even where there’s no bleed.
How does it compare with other everyday notebooks?
It’s thinner and cheaper per notebook than most Japanese school notebooks, with the colour-coded spines as its signature.

MUJI figures are from MUJI’s stores and Campus figures from KOKUYO Japan, as given in each guide. For handwriting at 6 mm, a fine pen such as the MUJI gel ink pen at 0.38 or 0.5 mm keeps letters inside the lines.
How big is B5 compared with US letter?
B5 is 179 mm (7 in) wide by 252 mm (9.9 in) tall here, about 1.5 in narrower and 1.1 in shorter than an 8.5 × 11 in letter sheet. It still fits a standard backpack and gives a full-width writing line. Our paper sizes guide compares B5, A5 and letter, and our A5 vs B5 notebook size guide shows which suits class notes.
Where is the MUJI Planted Tree notebook made?
MUJI lists Indonesia as the country of origin. Both MUJI USA and MUJI Japan’s store give Indonesia for the five-packs. MUJI is a Japanese brand run by Ryohin Keikaku in Tokyo.
