The A5 Square, new for 2027, is as wide as the A5 but much shorter.
How does a daily page work?
The left page of each spread has a vertical time schedule from 8:00 to 24:00, and the right page is free for a diary, sketches or notes. Midori adds “seven dots” at the top that you can use as a to-do list, extra hours or late-night times from 1:00 to 7:00.
Because the pages are undated, you write the date yourself. Midori notes that the ruled lines of the schedule show faintly through to the next page, as a guide for writing, and that marks on the right pages show where to stick the monthly index tabs.
What is MD Paper like to write on?
MD Paper is Midori’s own cream writing paper, which the company says resists bleeding and bleed-through while taking ink smoothly. At 80 g/m² it is much heavier than the thin Tomoe River paper in most Japanese daily planners, so writing shows through less.
That extra weight is also why the A6 diary is 23 mm thick and about 296 g. If you want to try the paper first, the undated Midori MD Paper Pad uses the same sheet. We haven’t yet tested the 2027 diary with wet inks.
Which size should you choose?
Choose the A6 to carry every day, the A5 Square for a wide spread that still fits a small bag, and the A5 for long entries at a desk. The A6 weighs half as much as the A5.
The A5 Square, 152 mm on each side, is new for 2027 and opens to a wide landscape spread. All three have the same 415 pages, so the only trade-off is room per day against weight.
How does the MD Diary compare to the Hobonichi Techo?
The MD Diary has heavier, more fountain-pen-friendly paper; the Hobonichi has thinner paper, dated days and a grid.
Midori’s Japanese MD PRODUCT store lists the 2027 1 Day 1 Page diary as made in Japan in all three sizes. Midori is a brand of Designphil Inc. in Tokyo, which sells the MD line as MD PRODUCT. The same paper comes on a stand in the MD Desk Calendar 2027.
