Key takeaways
The A6 Sooofa has 80 sheets of woodfree paper ruled in a 4 mm grid, listed by Kokuyo at 148 mm tall and 119 mm wide.
Its D-shaped soft rings are compact and flex, so Kokuyo says your hand doesn't catch on them when you write to the page edge.
The polypropylene cover has an elastic band, a notch at the top that holds a pen by its clip, and a clear pocket for loose papers.
Kokuyo lists the A6 at ¥710 (about US$4.50) before tax in green, light blue and pink, so it sits in our $ band.
Sooofa is a separate line from Kokuyo's Campus Soft Ring Notebook; it adds a cover with a band and pocket and is made in A7 to A5 and B6.
What is the Kokuyo Sooofa Soft Ring Notebook?
It is Kokuyo’s ring notebook for people who want the flat-opening ring format without the hard rings. Kokuyo calls it “simple yet smart and relaxed”, for use on and off the job, and builds it on the “new sensation soft ring” it developed for its Soft Ring notebooks. The A6 version is the pocket-sized member of a line that also includes A7 memo pads, B6 and A5.
It is not the same product as the Campus Soft Ring Notebook that our Kokuyo Soft Ring A5 guide covers. Both use soft rings, but the Sooofa has its own cover, paper ruling and colors.

The rings are D-shaped and soft, which keeps the ring edge slim and lets you write to the page edge. Kokuyo says the notebook keeps the good parts of a ring notebook, opening flat and folding back on itself for small spaces, while the rings spare your hand when it reaches the edge of the page. The D shape also means the ring is “compact” instead of bulky.
The page is cut-off type: micro-perforations beside the rings let you tear out only the sheets you need. Kokuyo doesn’t name the ring material on this page; our A5 guide covers the olefin resin of the older Soft Ring line.
What is the 4 mm grid like?
It is a 4 mm square grid printed in a “gentle, friendly warm gray”. Kokuyo describes the 80 pages as plenty of space for writing. A retailer’s description adds that the grid suits notes, lists, planning, diagrams and journaling; that is the shop’s wording, not a Kokuyo test. We haven’t measured the paper’s weight, since Kokuyo only says woodfree paper.
What does the cover do?
The polypropylene cover carries three small conveniences: an elastic band, a pen-clip cutout and a pocket. Kokuyo says the PP cover makes the notebook easy to carry. The band holds it shut, the cutout at the top lets a pen hang by its clip, and the included PP pocket holds loose papers.
Which Sooofa size and color should you choose?
The A6 suits a bag or jacket pocket; choose A5 for desk notes. Kokuyo’s series page lists the line in A7 memo, A6, B6 and A5. The A6 comes in green, light blue and pink. The A5 and B6 add warm gray and yellow, and B6 also has black and light gray. Kokuyo’s list prices before tax on that page were ¥710 (about US$4.50) for A6, ¥840 (about US$5.30) for B6 and ¥990 (about US$6.30) for A5. For another small Japanese notebook see the Kokuyo Campus notebook.
How much does the Kokuyo Sooofa A6 cost?
